The Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) is seeking to fill the limited term, full-time position of Research Analyst. This is a fifteen-month parental leave position.

CAUT is a progressive labour and professional organization representing more than 72,000 faculty, librarians, researchers, academics, and general staff at 124 universities and colleges. It promotes the economic and political interests of its members, advances the standards of the profession, and seeks to improve the quality and accessibility of post-secondary education in Canada.

Reporting to the Director of Legal and Labour Relations Services, General Counsel, and working under the coordination of the Research Officer, the Research Analyst supports the development and delivery of research projects that advance CAUT’s collective bargaining, advocacy, and policy work.

The position conducts data collection, analysis, and visualization, and assists with the maintenance of research databases and systems. The Research Analyst provides accurate, evidence-based insights that contribute to CAUT’s research and labour relations initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities

Research and analysis

  • Work in consultation with the Research Officer to deliver timely research projects in support of organizational and member association goals
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative research on collective agreement negotiations, benefits, salary trends, labour market issues, and other issues of interest to CAUT and member associations
  • Collect, clean, code, and analyze data from multiple sources to ensure accuracy, consistency, and integrity
  • Assist in the presentation of research results
  • Support the Research Officer in developing methodologies, templates, and tools for consistent data collection and analysis

Data visualization

  • Design and develop interactive dashboards and data visualizations using Power BI and other relevant software.
  • Data management and continuous improvement
  • Maintain research databases, documentation and electronic files and databases in accordance with established protocols
  • Adhere to established processes and quality control systems for research workflow and recommend enhancements to improve quality or efficiency
  • Adopt new tools and systems as relevant to the role

Collaboration and coordination

  • Work collaboratively with the Research Officer and other staff to ensure research priorities are aligned with organizational needs
  • Respond to internal and external research requests and provide relevant data or information as appropriate
  • Participate in regular team meetings to support coordination, communication, and planning
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by CAUT management

Hours and location

  • Full-time position, 35 hours per week
  • May be required to work overtime on occasion
  • Hybrid or in person in the CAUT office

Qualifications

Education and experience

  • Completion of post-secondary education in industrial relations, economics, or related discipline, including specialized technical education in research
  • At least three years of professional experience in a similar capacity
  • Experience using Microsoft Power BI to design dashboards and visualizations
  • Experience connecting to data sources, importing, and transforming data
  • Experience using Excel and other tools for data manipulation and analysis
  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods preferred
  • Work experience in the post-secondary education field is a strong asset.
  • Professional experience in an association, trade union, or not-for-profit organization preferred

Language requirements

  • Ability to work in both official languages at an advanced level is a strong asset
  • Fluency in verbal and written English essential

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Proficiency with Power BI and advanced Excel functions
  • Strong analytical and data interpretation skills with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex information clearly
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and balance competing priorities
  • Demonstrated initiative, judgment, and problem-solving ability within established frameworks
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining coordination with the Research Officer and other staff
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with the ability to build constructive relationships based on credibility and trust
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and familiarity with database management and data visualization tools, including Power BI

Compensation and benefits

This position has been classified as Category 3 in the Collective Agreement between CAUT and COPE Local 225. The current hire rate for this category as of July 1, 2025, is $103,163.00.

The position supports work-life balance through hybrid work and generous paid leave including five (5) weeks of vacation per fiscal year, sick and personal days, summer hours (Fridays off in July and ½ Fridays off in August), and winter holiday closure between December 22 and January 1 annually. In addition, the position is eligible for excellent benefits including extended health and dental benefits, disability and life insurance, employee and family assistance, a defined contribution pension plan with 11.5% employer contributions after six (6) months of employment, and various employer paid learning and development opportunities.
