The Aquatics Manager provides strategic and hands‑on leadership for the daily operations of the aquatics department as well as supporting with leadership of all departments, ensuring excellence in program delivery, staff performance, member experience, and facility safety. This role upholds high service standards and drives member satisfaction, contributing directly to annual membership growth and retention goals within a seven‑day‑a‑week operation. Working in alignment with the Center Manager’s and Aquatics Association Manager’s direction, the Aquatics Manager leads and develops departmental supervisors and staff through consistent coaching and support. They oversee all aquatics personnel—including lifeguards and swim instructors—fostering engagement, professionalism, and a strong culture of safety, service, and quality to achieve departmental and branch-wide goals.
Major Responsibilities**-in this position, you will:**
- Lead by example during daily Centre operations, providing direct leadership, guidance, and support to departmental supervisors, shift/team leads, and frontline aquatics staff.
- Maintain high service standards and member satisfaction levels, driving the achievement of annual swim lesson targets, member goals, and retention outcomes aligned with overall membership growth expectations.
- Provide ongoing mentorship and development to young and newly certified lifeguards and instructors, recognizing the important role the YMCA plays in shaping their early professional experiences.
- Implement and uphold all YBC Aquatics processes and documentation to meet or exceed requirements from governing bodies (e.g., BC Health Authority) and Standards of Practice (e.g., Lifesaving Society), ensuring safe, high‑quality aquatic program delivery.
- Maintain, track, and report on YBC Aquatics projects, tasks, and timelines to ensure a consistent, streamlined approach to staff training, safety and quality standards, YMCA Canada swim lesson programming, evaluations, and national aquatics expectations.
- Teach YMCA Swim Instructor courses, serve as an HFA Aquatics Champion through Y Canada, and support leadership growth in the team through the PLS program and active participation in communities of practice.
- Collaborate with and follow directives from the Centre Manager and Aquatics Association Manager on centre‑specific and aquatics mandates respectively, to ensure high‑quality program delivery and effective team supervision.
- Meet or exceed all quality standards and performance targets established by The YBC, YBC Aquatics RACI, leadership expectations, and annual operational plans.
- Model and reinforce The Y Way Experience Aquatics Playbook across programs, staff interactions, and member engagement to ensure exceptional service and safety outcomes.
Qualifications**-you bring:**
- University or College Degree
- Minimum of 3-5 years of leadership experience in a management role, including: Program Leadership, Managing Supervisors, including Aquatic Supervision Experience, with experience of daily operations overseeing 50 staff, for 1-3 years, with Program planning Experience
- Management of portfolio, and over 75 staff, within recreation for 3 years experience (multiple portfolios an asset: Children, Youth, Family; Fitness; Membership, Facilities Maintenance)
- Aquatics or equivalent, Program Planning and evaluation for improvement of quality, safety, and experience, participation (Aquatics specific or other area that transfers with combined disciplines/experiences),
- Experience in Training in the Aquatics Field with one or more of; YMCA or Lifesaving Instructor, National Lifeguard Instructor/Examiner, Swim Lessons Instructor Trainer from known certifying body (YMCA Champion, Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer, Lifesaving Swim Instructor Trainer), First Aid Instructor (Emergency, Standard First Aid – equivalent or higher) or equivalent
- Sound knowledge of Aquatic Safety Plans, BC Guidelines for Pool Operations, and Lifesaving Society Standards of Practice
- Strong organizational skills, with detailed orientated planning and delivery
- Experience with tracking certifications, use of software for Certification Compliance
- Demonstrated experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultures and backgrounds, including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity
- Scheduling staff, and maintaining daily operations
- Experience in a fast-paced environment and ability to adapt to regularly changing situations
- Excellent written communication and public speaking skills and area specific reports verbal and written to: Association Boards, Center Managers, Directors, and Committees
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR‐C & AED certificate
- Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date
