Position Summary...
The Senior Counsel manages and completes complex real estate-related transactions, negotiates and drafts intricate legal agreements, and provides ongoing legal advice to business units, effectively managing external counsel across Canada when engaged.
What you'll do...
The Senior Counsel of Real Estate plays a key role in supporting Walmart’s expanding footprint of stores and supply chain facilities across Canada. This role collaborates with cross-functional teams to negotiate real estate leases, purchase and sale agreements, licensee arrangements, and other commercial transactions. Additionally, the Senior Counsel advises on title, zoning, planning, and development matters, gaining experience with complex commercial and industrial projects nationwide.
This role also creates and builds capabilities within the Legal team for specific areas of legal expertise, ensuring significant cross-functional impact. The position involves setting and achieving clear objectives and key results (OKRs) for the legal domain, while staying current with legislative, legal, and regulatory changes. Regular updates, summaries, and analyses of these changes are provided to key stakeholders.
The position may involve planning, developing, and delivering internal education to the broader business on specialized legal areas, often in partnership with business stakeholders and compliance teams. This includes developing a comprehensive knowledge bank of training materials and related documentation.
The Senior Counsel builds best-in-class processes and templates to mitigate risk, reduce costs, and improve efficiency.
Qualifications
- LLB or JD
- 7+ years of commercial real estate experience at a leading law firm and/or in-house legal department
- Experience advising on construction and general commercial contract matters is an asset
- Excellent drafting and negotiation skills, as well as the ability to manage complex transactions and communicate practical legal advice to all levels of the company, including senior management, are essential
- Collaborative, energetic team player capable of handling multiple matters and meeting deadlines
- Strong business acumen, sound judgment, and interpersonal skills are critical
