The Academic Advising Assistant plays a key role in student retention, supporting new and continuing students throughout their tenure at Mount Royal University through referral to services, assisting with the explanation of policy, and the building of meaningful connections.
Working within the department of Academic Advising, this is a flexible position whose work schedule is variable and may include an irregular schedule of not less than three (3) hours per shift and up to thirty-five (35) hours per week.
##Responsibilities
Administrative Support (50%):
- Engage with student inquiries across multiple channels (email, phone, drop-in) with a focus on timely, accurate, and student-centred communication that reflects advising best practices and builds trust.
- Refer students to campus supports and services (e.g., Access and Inclusion Services, Student Learning Services, Financial Aid, Wellness) to address barriers to success.
- Participate in advising team meetings, institutional training, and other relevant activities to promote shared learning and collaboration.
- Possess strong working knowledge of Mount Royal Systems (Google Suite, mruGradU8, Banner, etc.).
Advising and Registration Support for Students (35%):
- Contribute to the consistency and quality of advising services by reviewing and enhancing student-facing tools, resources, and communication materials.
- Assist students by directing them to institutional policies, procedures, and graduation requirements.
- Teach students how to access and interpret key advising tools (e.g., mruGradU8, program planning guides, academic calendar, and the MRU website).
- Support any events or initiatives that are hosted by Academic Advising Services.
Data Management (15%):
- Assist with reporting, data collection, and documentation to support advising operations.
- Maintain accurate advising notes on behalf of Academic Advisors, understanding POPA regulations and best practices for record keeping.
