About the role

The Canadian Light Source (CLS) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules, and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions, working on everything from dinosaur skins to mine remediation and from cancer treatments to cutting-edge electronics.

CLSI is now accepting applications for a Mechanical Engineer. Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Lead, the Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for supporting the technical design, implementation, and maintenance of systems for the CLS facility. The successful candidate will demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and will possess the ability to effectively communicate and function as part of a highly skilled engineering group.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan engineering projects and potentially oversee the work of technicians or contractors installing components and equipment to ensure design requirements are met.

  • Prepare work plans, schedules, cost estimates for assigned tasks and ensuring timely completion.

  • Develop engineering solutions to complex problems while referring difficult, highly complex, or unusual engineering problems to supervisor for guidance.

  • Review and verify the designs and/or calculations of engineers-in-training (if applicable), technicians and technologists for technical accuracy, ensuring designs conform to CLS standards and other relevant codes, standards and practices.

  • Prepare written documentation such as specifications, procedures, reports, drawings and other technical documentation in accordance with CLS standards and other relevant codes, standards and practices.

  • Act as a liaison between the Engineering department and CLS internal customers, as well as external individuals and organizations.

  • Work with more senior engineers in developing proposal requests, specifications and tender documentation for contracted services and equipment purchases.

  • Participate in review of procurement/tender results and recommendations of contract awards for technical systems.

Areas of focus for this position are to support the operations and maintenance of hydronic and HVAC systems as well as planning and design for future expansions.

Qualifications:

  • University degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.

  • 3-5 years of relevant post-degree engineering work experience.

  • Eligible for professional membership in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS).

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Experience with hydronic and HVAC systems in a process plant setting

  • Strong working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and requirements for HVAC systems, pressure vessels and piping

  • Experience with design of hazardous gas exhaust/lab ventilation systems

  • Experience with refrigeration and/or cryogenic systems

  • Experience with project management, commissioning, and/or maintenance scheduling

  • Experience designing motion control systems

  • Knowledge of vacuum systems, including ultra-high vacuum

  • Knowledge of precision survey and alignment equipment and technology

Compensation: Starting salary range is $80,000-$90,000 for PEng candidates and will be based on experience. (Starting salary would be different for those who are EITs—more information can be provided upon request).
