Nasittuq Corporation (from the Inuktitut word meaning “looking out from the highest point”) operates and maintains the North Warning System (NWS) - a critical joint Canada-US radar network with 47 sites across Northern Canada, a Control Centre and Support Centre located in North Bay, ON and a Contract Management Office located in Ottawa, ON. 

This position is covered under the provision of the collective agreement with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W.) Local 2228.   OUR CORE VALUES:

Nature & Scope: 

We are seeking to hire a certified Heavy Equipment Operator (with airbrakes and extensive snow clearing experience) for a permanent rotational role (FIFO – 6 weeks on – six weeks off). Located at one of our northern radar sites in Nunavut, this position will be responsible for maintaining roads, grounds, and gravel surfaces to ensure safe route passage. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Safe operation of heavy equipment to maintain roads, run-ways, and grounds in extreme weather conditions

  • Assisting with Mobile Support Equipment (MSE) maintenance/repairs including keeping the buildings where the MSE are kept

  • Loading and unloading helicopters and fixed wing aircraft

  • Shovelling snow/grounds 

  • Cleaning vehicles, performing fuel dips and fuel transfers, and assisting with sealift material delivery

  • Providing assistance to the Facilities Maintenance Technicians in conducting preventative maintenance Inspections as directed

  • Strict adherence to all safety policies, participation in required training, adherence to cold-weather/remote-site procedures and prompt reporting of hazards or incidents is a condition of employment

  • Perform other duties as assigned

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Licensed heavy equipment operator with AirBrake certification 
  • Extensive experience operating equipment (front end loaders, dozers, graders, excavators, haul trucks, snowblowers, skid steer, forklift)
  • Must be experienced or trained on driving vehicles with attached trailers
  • Valid Class G driver’s license 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Reliability Security Clearance
  • Physically fit for Arctic terrain and remote conditions
  • Operators must complete a Safe Backing course 
  • Operators on airport ramps or runways must be authorized to do so by the appropriate Airport Authority
  • Sound work ethic and problem solving skills 
  • Effective team work with good communication and interpersonal skills 

ROTATION & OVERTIME: 6 weeks in/6 weeks out rotation (48-hour work weeks) with overtime at 1.5x base rate. Paid travel days (up to 2 days) with all travel costs covered.   LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Accommodation with meals, Wi-Fi, TV, laundry facilities, and recreation.   COMPREHENSIVE BENEFITS: Health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, and 5% contribution matched by employer   ADDITIONAL PERKS: Arctic clothing provided as needed and annual safety footwear allowance of $175. $500 referral bonus for eligible positions.   VACATION PAY: 6% vacation pay   NORTHERN LIVING ALLOWANCE: Additional biweekly allowance for employees residing in designated northern communities: Inuvik, Cambridge Bay, Sanirajak, and Iqaluit.
