The opportunity:
The HR Manager plays a key strategic role in academic hiring, tenure, and promotion processes within the Asper School of Business, ensuring alignment with university policies, Collective Agreements (UMFA, AESES, CUPE 3909), and relevant legislation. This position works on-site five days a week as part of the Institutional Effectiveness Unit, serving as a primary advisor to the Director of the Dean’s Office on all academic HR matters. The incumbent also leads and supports HR functions across support staff, student staff, and sessional instructors, providing guidance on recruitment, compliance, and employee relations.
This position will hold direct responsibility for addressing and managing the human resources needs of the specific departments and units. The role will involve direct and close collaboration with department heads and key stakeholders to ensure the alignment of HR strategies with the unique requirements of each unit. This will include providing tailored support in all aspects of Human Resources and other HR-related functions, with the goal of fostering a productive, compliant, and engaged workforce across the designated departments.
The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:
- A university degree in business administration or a related discipline; formal training in Human Resources, is required.
- A CPHR designation or working towards a CPHR, is considered an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Six years of directly related human resources experience is required.
- Knowledge of standard human resource policies and procedures, is required.
- Experience working in a multi-unionized setting, is required.
- Experience interpreting applying collective agreement provisions, is required.
- Knowledge of employment practices, Human Rights Legislation and Employment Standards required.
- Previous experience in the development, modification and implementation of office procedures, is required.
- Experience supervising and managing performance required.
- Experience working in an academic setting preferred.
- Experience navigating academic collective agreements, preferred.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal required.
- High aptitude for usage of HR portals and systems such as HRIS, applicant tracking systems, e-recruitment portals, etc. required.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy of same required.
- Excellent planning and organizational skills required.
- Proficient, at an intermediate level, in the use of Windows and Microsoft Office applications including: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook required.
- Must possess a positive attitude, diplomacy and ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with stakeholders.
- Conflict resolution skills, problem-solving skills, decision-making, planning and evaluation, business process reengineering, change management, and team-building skills are required.
- Must be able to lead, respond to client needs, manage change, deliver HR services, and apply HR principles to improve business efficiency.
- Ability to work with many types of individuals and organizations required.
- Able to liaise with internal and external stakeholders with a "customer service" attitude required.
- Must be results-orientated and focused on client needs.
- Must be able to guard and maintain confidentiality.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and organize and prioritize own workload required.
- Ability too carry out complex administrative tasks required.
- Ability to develop and implement modifications and recommend process improvements required.
- Ability create and maintain spreadsheets and databases; create reports utilizing and manipulating data sets required.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of tact and diplomacy at all times.
- Ability to remain calm in high-stress/sensitive situations.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
