Sales Development Representative (contract)
About the role
MarineLabs is a fast moving Coastal Intelligence data company that owns and operates a growing fleet of super rugged and rapidly deployable ocean weather instruments, producing reliable high-resolution data products in real-time to benefit marine safety and climate resilience. We are seeking a curious and highly motivated Sales Development Representative (SDR) to expand MarineLabs’ market presence and generate new business opportunities across the marine and coastal sectors. The successful candidate will provide thorough account research, stakeholder mapping, outbound prospecting, and opportunity qualification to build a healthy pipeline for the sales leadership team. This role requires strong research and communication skills, active listening, and the confidence to engage senior marine operations and port professionals in meaningful discovery conversations.
Key Responsibilities:
Prospect Research & Targeting Identify organizations that align with MarineLabs’ ideal customer profile, including ports, terminals, marine operators, ferry systems, pilot associations, government agencies, and coastal organizations Map complex stakeholder environments within target accounts Identify and prioritize key decision-makers, such as Harbor Masters, Marine Operations Managers, Port Authority Leaders, Terminal Operators, and Environmental/Safety Leaders Build and maintain targeted prospect lists within the CRM
Outbound Business Development Conduct outreach through email, LinkedIn, phone, industry events, and other channels Initiate conversations with marine operations professionals and executive leaders Generate interest and uncover potential business opportunities Follow up consistently and professionally through multi-touch campaigns
Discovery & Qualification Conduct initial qualification conversations to understand how organizations currently collect and use marine weather and ocean condition data Identify operational challenges, safety concerns, and data gaps Explore the impact of inaccurate or insufficient marine intelligence on operations Understand stakeholder involvement and decision-making processes Assess opportunity quality and readiness for next steps
CRM & Pipeline Management Maintain accurate prospect and activity records in Salesforce Track opportunities throughout the qualification process Document discovery findings and customer challenges Support sales forecasting and pipeline reporting
Market Intelligence Monitor trends within ports, marine transportation, coastal infrastructure, and ocean technology markets Gather competitive intelligence and customer feedback, and share insights with leadership
Qualifications:
Must-Haves 3+ years of experience in sales, business development, customer success, or a related client-facing role Strong verbal and written communication skills, with excellent listening and questioning abilities Comfortable initiating conversations with senior professionals Highly organized and self-motivated Experience using CRM platforms and sales engagement tools Ability to work independently in a remote environment
Nice-to-Haves Experience selling B2B technology, software, data solutions, or professional services Experience with account-based prospecting and discovery-based conversations Familiarity with LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Salesforce, or similar CRM and prospecting tools Interest in marine operations, transportation, environmental technology, weather intelligence, or industrial markets Experience selling into ports, transportation, government, infrastructure, or regulated industries Naturally curious and research-oriented, with strong persistence and resilience
Working Conditions: This position is full-time contract role (6 months), hybrid or remote, with preference for candidates located in Victoria, Vancouver Island, or Coastal BC. We’d love to hear from candidates of all backgrounds, orientations, and abilities.
