The Role
Reporting to the Director, Fund Development, the Development Officer, Major Gifts is an integral member of the Fund Development Team, helping to shape this exciting new chapter. This position focuses on creating meaningful donor engagement, inspiring generosity, and building lasting philanthropic relationships.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing a portfolio of donors and prospects with a focus on gifts in the $10,000 – $100,000 range.
- Developing and executing cultivation and solicitation strategies to inspire giving.
- Identifying potential sources of funding and driving revenue growth.
- Providing professional volunteer management for fundraising initiatives.

What You Will Do

Identify, cultivate, and solicit philanthropic support by developing and maintaining relationships with current donors and new prospects.

Develop and enhance donor relations through thoughtful cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities and by implementing intentional fundraising strategies.

Manage a portfolio of donors with a projected gift range of $10,000 - $100,000+ including private family and corporate foundations.

Create both personalized and organizational content for donor communications including thank you letters, impact reports, case for support, proposals, newsletters, personal notes and impact stories for individuals, corporations, foundations, and service clubs.

Work closely with the development and donor relations team and the Development Officer, Annual Giving to ensure donor acknowledgment, recognition, and stewardship activities are activated in a timely manner.

Develop a strong knowledge and understanding of The Alex, working closely with Program Leads and Teams to promote and increase awareness within the community.

Manage portfolio and constituent data by tracking all relationships, activities, actions, information, and outcomes in the donor database.

Lead future capital campaigns at The Alex.

Provide donor relationship management and support for Director of Fund Development, CEO, executive leadership, and The Alex Board of Directors.

Analyze and report on KPI’s for major gift portfolio in alignment with the Fund Development Plan and The Alex’s Strategic Plan.

Practice ethical fundraising, aligned with the mission and values of The Alex.

Perform additional duties as assigned.
What You Bring
- A bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in fundraising, community engagement and previous experience in the non-profit sector is preferred.
- Knowledge of Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) rules and guidelines regarding fundraising in Canada, specifically Alberta.
- Experience with fundraising and donor database management software is required; experience with Donor Perfect is an asset.
- Knowledge of the social services and/or community health sector
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a passion for telling community and impact stories.
- Strong organizational, time-management, analytical, problem-solving skills, and ability to balance multiple competing priorities and deadlines.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills: an ability to work effectively collaboratively and inclusively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Exceptional computer and software skills, with experience working in MS Teams and MS Office Suite and advanced database skills.
- Professionalism and tact in handling highly sensitive and confidential information ethically and with discretion.
- A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record check is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is preferred.
Work Environment and Hours
- The Alex Community Health Centre: 2840 – 2 Ave SE, Calgary, AB.
- 1.0 FTE (37.5 hrs/week)
- Standard hours 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday; occasional evening and weekend hours for special projects and events will be required**.**
- Continuous extended periods of sitting, with some standing and walking (sometimes up/down stairwells).
- Occasional travel within the city will be required.
