What do you offer?

The Day and Overnight Camp Coordinator plays a central role in the planning, coordination, and delivery of high-quality camp experiences at the Otonabee Day and Overnight Camp. Reporting directly to the Programs Manager, this position ensures the smooth daily and overnight operations of camp, fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for all participants.

During the summer camp season, the Coordinator will live on-site and provide leadership and support to staff and campers, with specific responsibility for overnight coverage on Mondays and Tuesdays and additional overnight responsibilities as required. In the off-season, the Coordinator supports the Outdoor Centre through program delivery, logistical planning, and site operations, with occasional overnight responsibilities.

This position requires a skilled, energetic, and adaptable leader who thrives in a dynamic camp environment, demonstrates sound judgment in managing risk and safety, and is committed to upholding YMCA values. The Coordinator will be expected to balance hands-on programming, staff supervision, and administrative tasks, ensuring exceptional experiences for children, youth, and families year-round.

Some of the tasks of this position include:

  • Train, lead, and advise full- and part-time staff as they develop in their roles.
  • Assist in the day-to-day operations of Camp Otonabee and the Outdoor Centre as required, including but not limited to kitchen support, waterfront supervision, and high ropes operations.
  • Provide high-quality facilitation and supervision of all program areas.
  • Requires standing, walking, and active participation in programming for up to 8–12 hours at a time.
  • Overnight stays on-site are required during the camp season, with scheduled overnight coverage (typically Mondays and Tuesdays) and additional on-call responsibilities as needed.
  • Frequent exposure to variable noise levels and all outdoor weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, insects, etc.).
  • Work may involve climbing, lifting, and other physically demanding tasks in varied outdoor environments.
  • Some administrative and planning duties are completed in a shared office setting with regular computer use.

What qualifications and abilities are we looking for?

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education

  • Post-secondary education in recreation, education, outdoor education, child and youth studies, or a related field.

Language

  • Ability to work effectively in both official languages (English and French) is an asset.

Experience, Skills and Abilities

  • 3–4 years of progressive experience in outdoor education, camping, or related program environments, including direct work with children and youth in both day and overnight camp settings.

Certifications:

  • Standard First Aid and CPR “C” (required)
  • National Lifeguard Certification (required)
  • Climbing Wall Instructor (CUI) Level 1 or 2 (asset)
  • Wilderness First Aid (40 hr) or Wilderness First Responder (80 hr) (asset)

Additional Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of child and youth development, including behaviour management and supportive supervision.
  • Solid knowledge of camp programming models and team management principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and evaluate new programs and services.
  • Experience supporting and supervising young staff teams, particularly teenagers and young adults.
  • Proven ability to manage and resolve conflict with campers, staff, and parents in a professional and constructive manner.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to adapt to diverse audiences including campers, families, staff, and community partners.
  • Sensitivity and experience working with individuals from diverse cultural, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds, including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity.
  • Experience working with children with exceptionalities and adapting programming to meet the needs of the individual
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours including days, evenings, weekends, and overnight shifts as required.
