The Ministry of Parks Culture and Sport’s strategic focus is on quality of life and economic growth, and we do this by working with diverse groups and communities to enhance the province’s cultural, artistic, recreational, and social life; to promote excellence in the arts, culture, heritage, and sport; and to represent the interests of the province’s French-language population. The ministry manages and enhances Saskatchewan’s provincial parks system and the Royal Saskatchewan Museum; conserves ecosystems and cultural resources; and provides recreational and interpretive opportunities for park and museum visitors.
The Opportunity
The ministry’s Parks Division has an exciting opportunity in the Landscape Protection Unit. The unit plays a pivotal role within the ministry by providing leadership, oversight, and direction for landscape protection across provincial parks. As a dedicated team, we work collaboratively to protect and conserve provincial park ecosystems. We are seeking a highly skilled, energetic, and proactive team player to join us as a Park Ecosystem Specialist.
Reporting to the Senior Park Grassland Ecologist, the Park Ecosystem Specialist will assist the unit with ecosystem-based planning and project implementation. This position provides technical support for invasive species management, prescribed fire, grassland management, ecosystem restoration, and species at risk assessments.
Ideal Candidate
As the Park Ecosystem Specialist, you will be required to:
- Conduct field inventories, surveys, and monitoring activities.
- Apply treatments/mitigation measures for invasive plant species occurrences.
- Conduct field compliance checks on grassland management operations.
- Plan and implement prescribed burns.
- Develop and deliver workshops/training.
- Develop and manage contracts.
- Conduct ecological management and monitoring activities in the core and backcountry areas of the provincial park system; and
- Supporting data collection and analysis to inform evidence-based management decisions.
- Collaborate with park staff, researchers, and external partners.
You will have knowledge of:
- Expertise in grassland ecosystems, forest health, biodiversity, environmental management principles, best practices for ecosystem health, prescribed fire, and conservation throughout Saskatchewan parklands;
- The ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships and facilitate effective engagement.
- The ability to effectively write, analyze, research, and develop options and solutions.
- The ability to explain technical and non-technical information, both in writing and verbally, to a variety of stakeholders, Indigenous groups, and the public with varying levels of understanding; and
- Knowledge of relevant acts and programs, government planning, and decision-making processes.
- Knowledge of ArcGIS and other GIS platforms, and data management techniques.
Typically, the knowledge and skills for this position would be obtained through the successful completion of a four-year Degree in biology/ecology, resource management, or a related field, and a minimum of four years' experience in a similar field. The candidate should be a Registered Professional Agrologist or be eligible for registration with the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists. Experience with ArcGIS and other GIS platforms, UAV operation, invasive species management, prescribed fire, grazing and haying, and habitat restoration are an asset.
The successful candidate will be required to travel to remote locations to conduct work activities, work irregular hours, conduct field studies, surveys, and assessments, and will be required to operate four-wheel drive trucks, all-terrain vehicles, and small motorized boats. A valid class five driver’s license is required. A satisfactory criminal record check is required.
