About the role

The Dean's Department in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Senior Biostatistician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 10 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Biostatistician is responsible to the Director of the Centre for Health Informatics (CHI), in the Cumming School of Medicine. The Biostatistician will oversee projects using advanced scientific knowledge in leading research projects with principal investigators in the fields of medicine and public health. The position involves collaboration and interaction with researchers from the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta, industry partners, as well as employees from Alberta Health Services and Alberta Health and Wellness. The Senior Biostatistician will be required to attend meetings for potential collaboration with groups and provide feedback and comments on strategic projects.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Works closely with the members of the Centre for Health Informatics to provide research leadership and consultation for research projects
  • Sets direction, supervises team members, as well as supports the design of industry partner project requests as they come in
  • Ensures high quality statistical and data analytical services for The Centre members and lead the development of new research initiatives and research proposal development
  • Conducts advanced research in health data science by developing innovative methodologies in large administrative health data and electronic medical records. Lead other researchers to develop research proposals, particularly data methods and analysis sections
  • Communicates technical concepts to lay persons and develop educational materials and workshops to advance research capabilities of Cumming School of Medicine scientists
  • Provides statistical consultation to research project development and analysis, take responsibility of analysis for research projects
  • Leads, trains, and mentors junior staff members
  • Writes summaries of data analyses as needed for scientific presentations and manuscripts
  • Publishes research results in peer review journals
  • Manage/manipulates large health databases, such as clinical databases, administrative health data, and electronic medical records
  • Designs data collection instruments and provide data solutions as required for research projects
  • Performs statistical analysis using various methods and provides analytic solutions for complex and challenging research questions
  • Provides the statistics and statistical programming workshop and training for the graduate students, clinical fellows, physicians, and other researchers
  • Has the potential to oversee the writing of tri-council grant applications and directs the activities of successful grant involving teams of clinicians, statisticians, and data scientists
  • Serves as a knowledge expert in statistical methods and provides guidance and mentorship for other team members

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • PhD in Biostatistics, Statistics, Mathematics, Epidemiology, or related field required
  • 10+ years of experience in conducting research projects
  • Perform detailed innovated study designs, documentation, and implementation of highly complex statistical analyses
  • Tri-council grant writing and execution experience required
  • Project management skills are an asset
  • Experience in outcome and health services research
  • Knowledge of Alberta's healthcare administrative databases
  • Expert working knowledge of SAS, STATA, R, Python or other programming languages
  • A deep understanding of predictive modeling and statistical concepts, machine learning approaches, and critical thinking ability to develop advanced methods to innovate health data science
  • Consultation experience in health-related field is an asset
  • Leadership experience and ability to work under pressure has been demonstrated
  • Work/research experience in the use of ICD-10-CA coded data and concepts, clinical data, administrative health data and/or electronic medical record is required
  • Strong communications and customer services skills
  • Experience with presenting administrative data topics to multidisciplinary audiences (training, seminars, conference talks, etc.)
  • Must be able to protect sensitive health care and research data & understand regulations and policy from both the Office of Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (FOIP & HIA) and the Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board (CHREB)
  • Publication record in peer-reviewed publications and/or contributions to open-source projects available on GitHub is an asset
  • Ability to clearly communicate statistical concepts in lay language to health researchers and clinicians required
