We are looking for an intermediate mining engineer to become a part of our Fort Hills Integrated Mining, Tailings & Closure Engineering teams located in Calgary supporting the Fort Hills mine operation. In this role, you will apply mine engineering principles to support the development and execution of mine, tailings and closure plans for Fort Hills. The role is closely integrated with project development, short range planning, and operations, and other various teams across the Suncor organization.

Fully qualified professional level Performs a variety of more complex engineering tasks such as construction designs, work methods & techniques and various assignments requiring a good knowledge of an area of engineering are carried out with limited supervision. Mature judgment is required in planning and performing assignments and achieving prescribed objectives. The successful candidate will work in a collaborative environment and will interact with technical and operations staff.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in Mining, Civil, Geological Engineering or equivalent program
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a mining technical role, including mine planning, reliability, maintenance planning/scheduling, or operations, with site experience an asset.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or are immediately eligible for professional licensing with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • Strong computer skills: experience with mine planning software, Microsoft Office suite of programs is essential

Responsibilities:

  • Develop designs and calculate volumes as required for integrated mine, tailings and closure plans and/or support mine development infrastructure.
  • Create and present plans and stewardships on productivity, geological and geotechnical risks, water management, tailings deposition, mining rates and equipment capabilities with originality
  • Effectively communicate with various technical teams, operations and project coordinators to support plan development as required
  • Devise new approaches and apply current processes in new ways every single day
  • Analyze technical data and draw conclusions from comparative situations
  • Independently plan and conduct projects to improve mine efficiency as required
  • Be a dedicated role model for safety policies, procedures and practices
  • Plan and organize work for the reclamation and sustainability of our growing operations

Location and other Key Details:

  • This is an office-based role. You will work out of our Calgary head office
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
  • Our engineering roles follow internal compensation guidelines, and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work
