About the role

OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Manager, Common Collection System, the Specialist, Common Collection Services - AB is responsible to support the activities related to recycling operations of the regulated program as per regulatory requirements under Alberta Extended Producer Responsibility Regulation 194/2022 for Single-Use Products, Packaging and Paper Products (PPP). The Specialist’ primary focus will be to ensure the operational contracts, policies and practices established by Circular Materials (CM) are clearly communicated, understood, and followed in the field and managed with best practices administratively. This will result in greater overall efficiency and effectiveness and lead to increased collection and diversion of PPP materials. The Specialist will be a day-to-day CM representative to collection and post-collection partners in Alberta.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Manager(s), Common Collection System in contract development, collection of information, and contract management; including making contract value and type assessments, securing contracts; including making assessments on contract value and type, and working with internal teams to manage the procurement process.
  • Maintain system data and case management files; including preparing accurate, timely and data driven reports as required.
  • With the Manager, Common Collection System, develop a program to monitor and track operations across Alberta including site visit schedules and inspections, data tracking, contamination tracking and abatement plans, site usage and volumes for rationalization purposes and feedback for Communications and Marketing.
  • Actively engage with and monitor contracts with communities and service providers; including identifying risks and anticipating and resolving issues.
  • Provide in-field training and support for service providers on established CM policies and practices based on Alberta regulatory compliance.
  • Facilitate efficiency changes to municipal operations that support Circular Materials strategic and operational plans by providing support to municipal service providers.
  • Escalate any issues from discussions with various stakeholder groups, including Communities and Contractors, and other industry related associations to the Manager, Common Collection System as needed.
  • Support the on-going addition of single family and multi-family dwellings with field visits and spot checks as identified by the Alberta Management Team.
  • Attend and/or support site and material audits to support the Material Quality team.
  • Working with service providers, oversee, lead and/or participate in (as appropriate) activities such as bale audits and waste composition studies that aim to improve the performance of Circular Materials waste diversion activities.
  • Collaborate with the National Operations team on areas of continuous improvement.
  • Other duties as may be required from time-to-time, including attendance at events, and third-party meetings as necessary.
  • Supervise and support special projects as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Post-secondary education related to environmental studies, business/program administration, engineering, or related discipline, and/or related experience.

Experience

  • 2- 5 years’ experience in operations of recycling programs, waste management, regulatory, or related roles.
  • Experience working with contracts, by-laws, policies and procedures.
  • Experience with data gathering, inputting, and reporting.
  • Continuing education and professional development in communications, data management, or project management is an asset.
  • Direct experience or knowledge of PPP recycling programs, stewardship programs, or a related field is beneficial.

  • Ability to conduct detailed analysis and provide summaries and recommendations.
  • Knowledge of waste management, materials management, logistics or related operational business activities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365, including Excel, SharePoint, Teams, Visio, and Jira.
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical, problem solving, planning, and execution skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills which can build relationships with communities, internal CM teams and at all levels in the CM organizational structure.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to effectively create and implement project plans.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working Hours

  • All CM employees work 40 hours per week, remotely from a home office environment.

  • This role requires field work. As a result, there will be some variability in scheduling to accommodate operational needs.

  • This role may require coordinating and meeting with internal and external stakeholders in multiple Canadian time zones.

  • Extra or flexible hours may be required on occasion.

Remote and/or Field Work

  • Remote and Field Work is required.

  • Remote working environment with the ability to travel throughout Alberta as needed.

Travel

  • Requires travel within Alberta to meet with collection, transportation and processing partners and conduct site inspections.

  • A valid driver’s license is required.
