Location - This is an in-person role with potential work locations at one or more of the following UofA sites: North Campus (Edmonton), Campus Saint-Jean (Edmonton), and South Campus (Edmonton).

Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Building Operations, the lock shop supervisor provides technical leadership and supervision to a team of Journeyperson locksmiths. Additionally, this position assists team members in understanding assigned roles and performance objectives and strives to build a collaborative team through guidance, training, and mentorship. As the senior technical expert on the team, the lock shop supervisor serves as the initial point of contact for inquiries and escalations and strives to optimize program/service and operational performance.

The lock shop supervisor is responsible for monitoring staff performance and attendance and ensuring that all employees follow applicable UAPPOL policies and procedures. Additional duties include work distribution, team development, providing long-term vision and maintaining and developing a robust safety program within the lock shop

The Campus Operations & Services team supports the University of Alberta through a range of essential services and works for operating, maintaining and renewing infrastructure across our campuses.

  • Anticipates client/stakeholder needs and proactively addresses concerns. Identifies ways to improve processes/programs and or services. Creates efficiencies or recommends changes where required.

  • Provides advice, information, and technical interpretation on complex technical matters in a manner that can be easily understood by clients/stakeholders who do not share the same technical background. Creates a common understanding of a deficiency, service gap or inefficiency with clients and/or stakeholders.

  • Serves as the point of contact for escalation of issues. Resolves issues within its own span of control and communicates the resolution to all stakeholders. Knows when to seek advice from others. Escalates issues which cannot be resolved by the team.

  • Collaborates with clients and team members on the development of projects, project scoping and planning.

  • Participates in regular meetings with other team leads.

  • Coordinates team activities based on area prioritizations. Keeps the team focused and on track by assigning and allocating work to team members. Matches work to the appropriate team member(s).

  • Creates a supportive and inclusive team environment that encourages open communication amongst team members.

  • Ensure that all members of the team have the necessary training to perform their respective work safely.

  • Journeyperson Locksmith with at least 10 years of institutional experience.

  • Min 5 years in a leadership role.

  • Training/familiarity with automatic door openers.

  • Supervisory Leadership Course

  • Supervisory EHS Professional Development Course

  • A valid Alberta Class 5 (non-GDL) driver’s licence is required

  • Must submit a current three-year driver’s abstract demonstrating no more than six (6) demerit points and/or a maximum of two (2) moving violations within the past two (2) years
