Tree Inventory and Assessment Leader

These green assets are a cherished legacy central to the well-being of our community. We are seeking a Leader to help us preserve, maintain, and grow this magnificent Municipal Forest for generations to come.
As the Inventory and Assessment Leader, you will oversee the comprehensive inventory and condition assessment of all open space and boulevard trees. You will serve as the primary technical expert for urban forest data, collaborating with internal teams to ensure data integrity and accessibility. Beyond the data, you are a mentor, coaching a team of Landscape Technicians to maintain high standards of quality and safety. Your work directly enhances public safety and the beauty of our city for all residents.
What will you do?
- Provide leadership, coaching and mentoring for staff, including permanent and seasonal team members
- Develop and execute the annual work plan for tree inventory updates and city-wide assessments
- Establish and enforce rigorous Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) standards for all field data collection
- Conduct expert-level analysis of tree data to identify trends, risks, and failure susceptibility
- Prepare data-driven technical inputs for multi-million dollar capital budget proposals for asset renewal
- Develop and deliver specialized technical training on geospatial equipment, software, and arboricultural protocols
- Investigate and resolve complex technical inquiries related to tree data from internal collaborators and the community
- Manage the ongoing accuracy and migration of the municipal tree inventory database and related GIS layers
Qualifications:
- Completion of a Two year Technical Diploma in Urban Forestry, GIS or a related field or an undergraduate degree in Urban Forestry or a related field
- A minimum of eight (8) experience in Arboriculture, GIS or Urban Forestry, including a minimum of 2 years supervising or leading staff in a municipal setting and supervising unionized staff
- In-depth knowledge of Davey Tree Keeper software
- Proven proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geospatial data management
Assets:
- ISA Certified Arborist Certification
- Tree Risk Assessment Qualification
- Tree Appraisal Qualified
- Leadership Training
Skills required for success:
- Proven customer service skills to effectively interact with partners, community members and members of the public
- Advanced knowledge of arboriculture principles and industry best practices for condition assessment
- Ability to coordinate, mentor, and provide technical direction to diverse teams and contractors
- Strong judgmental skills to prioritize emergent risks alongside long-term program goals
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of digital data collection tools to streamline workflows
- Act as a key technical lead during extreme weather events
- Skill in presenting persuasive technical reports to management and community partners
- Proficiency with computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, and SAP.

Conditions of Employment:
- Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and, where appropriate, will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance
- Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
- Possession of current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications
Work Environment:
- Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
- This role operates in both an office setting and field environment
- The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains
- Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, noise, light variation, vibrations, chemicals, animals, and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur
- This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, reaching, requiring physical stamina and resilience
- This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
