Position Summary

Based out of Halifax or New Glasgow, NS, the Director, Total Rewards provides leadership in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of Crombie’s compensation, benefits, payroll, and other related programs. This role ensures alignment with business objectives and collaborates with senior leadership to create innovative, competitive, and cost-effective initiatives that attract, retain, engage, and motivate top talent. With a focus on supporting Crombie’s organizational culture, guiding values, and employee value proposition, the role oversees programs for employees and executives, ensuring they drive alignment with Crombie’s strategy and mindset. This role spans strategy, delivery, and hands-on support. The core duties are:

Total Reward Strategy & Program Design

  • Develops, implements, and optimizes comprehensive total rewards programs including base pay, incentives, executive perks, benefits, retirement, time off, and payroll, ensuring external competitiveness and alignment with business objectives
  • Develops and implements compensation philosophy, strategy, and design, including job architecture, salary structures, pay equity, and annual compensation programs and reviews
  • Designs and administers executive compensation plans, including base salary, short-and long-term incentives, and other rewards tailored to senior leadership roles
  • Leads all total rewards projects, providing strategic direction, managing resources, overseeing adherence to timelines, and evaluating project outcomes
  • Develops effective communication and training strategies, ensuring leaders and employees understand compensation practices, policies, and decision-making frameworks
  • Oversees compensation administration and unit tracking platforms/systems

Market Intelligence, Benchmarking & Job Architecture

  • Conducts market analysis and benchmarking to ensure Crombie remains competitive in attracting and retaining talent, while maintaining internal equity and fairness
  • Leads job evaluation and architecture functions, collaborating with third parties as needed to maintain the integrity of Crombie’s role structure
  • Conducts executive compensation benchmarking and remains current on market trends, governance practices, and regulatory standards
  • Participates in annual compensation surveys

Executive Compensation, Governance & Board Support

  • Prepares executive compensation recommendations, policies and reports for the Board of Trustees, ensuring alignment with Crombie’s goals, unitholder interests, and regulatory standards
  • Prepares expert advice for the executive team and Board of Trustees on compensation trends, governance practices, and policy recommendations
  • Prepares annual disclosures for executive compensation and ensures compliance with executive compensation-related disclosures, reporting requirements, and audit requirements

Analytics, Reporting & Financial Oversight

  • Prepares costing and analysis and provides oversight of KPI and analytics
  • Streamlines reporting process and procedure for all total rewards streams (including but not limited to G&A wage and benefits budgets and payroll costs) and analyzes variances, partnering with People & Culture and Finance teams using data analytics

People Leadership

    • Ensures that team members have a clear understanding of corporate and departmental objectives and are held accountable to meet performance standards and objectives.

    • Leads a team that is strategically aligned with and understands the organization’s strategy, is engaged, and represents Crombie’s guiding values.

The profile we are looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field, or a combination of relevant education, training, and experience
  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR), or equivalent designation would be an asset
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive experience in human resources with at least 3 years working in senior leadership compensation and Benefits,
  • Proven expertise in all facets of total rewards strategy including modeling, designing, and implementing in complex, multi-jurisdictional organizations
  • Advanced financial acumen and expertise to define, align, and drive initiatives that align with organizational objectives
  • Experience managing executive compensation programs and working with Boards or Compensation Committees.
  • Solid project management and change leadership experience, with the ability to guide teams effectively
  • Advanced analytics capabilities
  • Ability to present complex ideas and data in clear and simple terms and translate into actionable insights and provide recommendations
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels
  • Advanced proficiency in HRIS systems, compensation tools, and MS Office Suite
  • Deep understanding of compensation and benefits regulations and trends
