Palliser School Division is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Payroll Specialist on a temporary basis to join our team. In this role, you'll be responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely payment of staff. We are looking for someone with a strong understanding of payroll principles and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality and accuracy.

The****Division:
Palliser School Division, located in southern Alberta, serves approximately 8,100 students across a diverse range of communities from Coaldale to Calgary. Our schools include 14 community schools, 8 faith-based alternative programs, a sports-focused school, programs for Low German-speaking Mennonite families, 18 Hutterian colony schools, and online and international learning options. WhatYouWill****Do:
- Will report directly to the Human Services Supervisor.
- Process biweekly and monthly payroll for all staff, including teachers, support staff, and administrators.
- Administer and interpret collective agreements, employment contracts, and board policies related to compensation, benefits and leaves of absence.
- Ensure compliance with federal and provincial legislation, including Alberta Employment Standards and tax regulations.
- Calculate and process a variety of payroll deductions, such as union dues, pension contributions (Local Authorities Pension Plan – LAPP, Alberta Teachers' Retirement Fund – ATRF), and benefit premiums (Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan – ASEBP).
- Prepare and submit government remittances and year-end reporting, including T4's and Records of Employment (ROEs).
- Maintain accurate and confidential payroll records and respond to employee inquiries about pay and benefits.
- Onboard new employees, ensuring all payroll-related documentation is complete and accurate.
- Perform other related duties as required by the Human Services Supervisor.
TheSuccessfulCandidatewillhave:
- Strong understanding of pension administration and collective agreements
- Strong understanding of Alberta Labour Relations.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
- Proficiency with payroll systems and with Google Sheets, Google Docs and Microsoft Office.
- Strong analytical, organization, and problem-solving skills, with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Skills in resolving conflicts effectively to foster understanding and drive positive results
- The ability to demonstrate unwavering ethical conduct, integrity, loyalty, respect, and honesty in all interpersonal relationships. The ideal candidate will consistently uphold these values, fostering trust and collaboration within our division.
Education/Experience
- Business Administration Diploma in Accounting or a related field is required.
- Canadian Payroll Association Certification is preferred.
- A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a full-cycle payroll environment.
- Experience working with a school division and in a unionized environment is preferred.

About Palliser School Division
The Palliser Regional Schools is a school jurisdiction located in southern Alberta. The geographical area stretches from just south of Lethbridge to the Bow River south of Calgary. Palliser Centre houses the Central Office Administration, Maintenance and Transportation Services and is located in the City of Lethbridge. In addition, a satellite Maintenance Shop has been set up in the Town of Vulcan. The division offers full public education services to approximately 8,1000 students from early childhood services through Grade 12. Palliser has 15 community schools, 17 Hutterian colony schools, 10 Christian alternative schools, nine of which are in Calgary on seven different campuses, four outreach programs, an online school, and two dedicated Low German Mennonite alternative programs. One of our outreach schools and a junior high in one of our community schools also serve the LGM community.
