As an Occupational Exercise Physiologist, you will provide a variety of health and wellness services to the Calgary Fire Department (CFD). This includes assessing a firefighter candidate's fitness status and providing ongoing coaching, nutritional, exercise and lifestyle support across all stages of a firefighter's career. Primary duties include:

  • Conduct wellness assessments to analyze body composition, cardiopulmonary aerobic capacity, muscular endurance and highlight prevention opportunities for members.
  • Provide personalized exercise, nutrition and lifestyle counselling based on an individual's wellness assessment.
  • Perform equipment repair and maintenance, calibration and monitor equipment lifecycle; research and purchase new equipment.
  • Research, create and update clinic resources related to health and well-being, including training, injury prevention, injury rehabilitation and nutrition.
  • Teach a variety of health and wellness topics and provide one on one and group coaching sessions to uniformed and non-uniformed staff.
  • Schedule and oversee the Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) for candidates and Cadets.
  • Lead and teach Recruit Fitness as part of the Training Academy curriculum, including fundamental movement patterns and proper lifting techniques.
  • Research and critically assess the latest fitness, nutrition and wellness trends and make recommendations based on emerging scientific evidence.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Kinesiology or a related Health Sciences field and at least 2 years of experience working in the Health and Fitness industry is required.
  • Certification as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) with the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology (CSEP).
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) level "C" and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certifications.
  • Experience analyzing fitness testing data and the ability to counsel, instruct and coach is essential.
  • Previous experience in occupational strength and conditioning training or a high-performance setting is preferred.
  • Training or certification such as Mkin, National Strength and Conditioning Association (NCSA), National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) or equivalent will be considered an asset.
  • You are an analytical thinker with excellent research and communication skills, a high attention to detail, the ability to work collaboratively and build relationships, sound judgement and a strong focus on results.
