About the Role:
Global Regina’s News Department is seeking a full-time Assignment Editor to join its team. The successful candidate will be a dedicated and proven journalist ready to take on a pivotal role in the newsroom. A strong sense of news and good organizational skills are required. You must be up to the challenge of leading a team of committed and competitive people. A can-do attitude is necessary. This is a key position in a highly motivated newsroom and there is great room for personal growth. This position reports directly to the Provincial Managing Editor for Saskatchewan. This is a Group 5 position under the current collective agreement.
You will contribute by:
The following is a summary of the primary functions, but does not outline all the duties and responsibilities that may be assigned to this position:
- Develop daily and long-term planning of editorial content and strategies.
- Research and craft original and creative story ideas, including enterprise stories and special event coverage.
- Chase sources and information and have the ability to react to breaking news.
- Work with the managing editor to assign reporters, cameras, and other resources.
- Function as a resource for reporters.
- Communicate with Regina on the technical needs for each newscast.
- Assign live resources as needed.
- Communicate with other affiliates to support the network on stories of regional / national interest.
- Participate in and co-lead assignment meetings.
- Work with online producers to ensure seamless transition of content across all platforms.
Skills and experience you will bring:
The ideal candidate will have the following:
- Post-secondary education in journalism, communications, or a related field.
- Minimum of three years’ experience in the news industry, preferably as a news producer, digital journalist, or assignment editor.
- Strong news judgment and knowledge of Saskatchewan, including current events and politics.
- The ability to motivate a talented team of reporters with an opportunity for growth in leadership.
- Excellent news writing skills with a high degree of competence and clarity.
- Strong work ethic.
- Ability to adapt in a rapidly changing media and technology landscape.
- Ability to lead a competitive and aggressive newsroom.
- Ability to motivate and mentor.
- A desire to always push forward and try new things.
- Ability to write/produce online versions of news stories.
- Strong research skills.
- Ability to handle the demands and pressure of multiple daily online and broadcast deadlines.
