The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Geologist to join our Mines Technical Services team at Totten Mine in Sudbury. This is a fixed-term (12 months) position covered under the Collective Agreement between Vale and the Local 2020-05 United Steelworkers. This posting is for an existing vacancy.
As a Geologist, you will provide geological oversight and support to underground execution geology. Your experience and skills will work closely with Engineering, Ground Control and Operations to support the mine designs for the Life of Mine Plan.
Additionally, in this position you will:
- Follow departmental safety program.
- Provide grade control monitoring for assigned area in the mine.
- Communication of daily geology information to operations by clear, concise verbal and written instructions.
- Communication of cutoff grade calls to operations to maximize ore recovery.
- Conduct geological and structural back mapping.
- Perform stope reconciliation, calculating mineability and dilution values, root cause determination and share findings with operations.
- Core logging and QAQC.
- Collect and process geological data (including conductivity probing) for the purpose of ore interpretation and reserve and resource calculations.
- Communicate changes in geological interpretation to engineering and operations.
- Communicate observed and potential safety hazards to mine supervision.
- Communication of cut-off grade calls to operations department for area of a mine.
- Provide geological and structural information (ore outlines) for drive layouts for assigned area of a mine.
- Carry out specific accountabilities as assigned by the Chief Mine Geologist.
- Identify, analyze and recommend opportunities for safety, productivity and cost improvements.
- Frequent underground travel is required.

About You
Education:
- The successful candidate will possess a minimum Geological Technologist Diploma, Preferred B. Sc. Geology or B.Sc. Geological Engineering. Qualifications: Progressive eligibility for APGO (Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario), registered GIT (Geologist in Training).
Experience:
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of one year experience and is preferred in an underground mine environment.
Skills:
- Advanced understanding of data collection and database management, mineral resource management and reporting system including mineability and dilution, Grade Control, and diamond drill hole layouts.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products to include Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products to include Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook Demonstrated competency in industry software including: DatamineR StudioRM, Deswik, Leapfrog, and Vulcan). Ability to visualize and interpret 3D geological data for modelling and grade interpolation. Knowledge of Mining, Milling and Refining Processes.
- Knowledge of Vale geological guidelines and standards. Understand and have knowledge of Geological Systems including: AMGC (All Mines Grade Control), MEBS (Mines Exploration Bore Hole System), M&D (Mineability and Dilution) reporting, Diamond Drill Hole Layouts.
- Sudbury Basin Geology knowledge is necessary to be successful in role.
