Duties

The main duties of the Trades Helper include but are not limited to:

  • Perform grounds maintenance tasks such as grass cutting, landscaping, and brush clearing. With both manual and powered equipment.
  • Remove snow and ice from roads, sidewalks, and other areas using tools and equipment
  • Operate various equipment including skid steers, dump trucks, and snowplows
  • Assist with basic repairs to fences, signs, drainage systems, and paved surfaces
  • Support tradespeople with simple maintenance tasks in a multi-trade environment

Intent of the process

We are currently seeking candidates to fill immediate positions in Halifax, NS, as well as anticipatory positions in Greenwood, NS, Gagetown, NB, Oromocto, NB, and Gander, NL. These opportunities are term appointments with the possibility to become indeterminate.

A pool of partially or essentially qualified candidates may be established through this process and may be used to staff identical or similar positions at the Department of National Defence.

EX 01: Experience assisting skilled tradespersons or working in a labour/trades environment.

EX 03: Experience performing grounds maintenance tasks such as grass cutting, brush clearing, landscaping, or snow/ice removal.

AEX 01: Experience with Roads and Grounds Maintenance

AEX 03: Experience operating vehicles or equipment such as tractors, skid steers, snowplows, or dump trucks.
AEX 04: Experience in the horticulture field.
AEX 05: Experience driving and backing up a trailer

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Willing and able to work overtime, as required

Willing and able to be on standby and report to work when required

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

  • Possession of a valid and unrestricted Provincial or Territorial Driver’s Licence

  • Willing and able to climb ladders, stairs and scaffolds

  • Willing and able to work for extended periods of time in adverse weather conditions

  • Willing and able to lift and carry items repetitively weighing up to 30 kgs, in accordance with general safety practices

  • Willing and able to obtain and maintain a DND 404 driver’s licence

  • Requirement to wear and/or utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) equipment such as, face mask, respirator, etc in compliance with safety regulations. A fit test will be required for certain PPE.

  • Strict adherence to the Department of National Defence and Canadian Forces Code of Values and Ethics, Values and Ethics Code for the Public Sector, Directive on Conflict of Interest, and Defence Administrative Orders and Directives (DAOD) 7021-1, Conflict of Interest.
