Position Summary Outpatient Coder Specialist, Health Records-Coding Your goal in this position is to accurately code and abstract Emergency, Day Surgery and Clinic patient related health information in accordance with CIHI’s ambulatory data set practices using the Med2020 WinRecs suite of application(s). You are required to meet all benchmarks set for coding productivity standards. You will participate in month end activities for data submissions to CIHI and assist with hospital and departmental data quality assurance. You have advanced computer skills with proficient use of WinRecs and Cerner, as well as, ICD10 and CCI coding classification systems. You have the ability to analyze information and demonstrate problem solving and decision making skills. You have exceptional organizational, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills. You are also able to work independently. This position supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and families.
On a practical level, you will
- Meet benchmarks set for coding productivity standards
- Be able to code and abstract health information using ICD-10-CA/CCI and WinRecs
- Have a working knowledge of Crystal Reports as they apply to coding/abstracting systems for QA
- Have thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology, disease and disease process, medications and their uses, microbiology, medical terminology and diagnostic test results
- Have thorough knowledge of Canada and Ontario’s coding/abstracting principles and practices
- Have thorough knowledge of the NACRS Abstract Database and Ontario’s ERNI initiatives
- Understand grouping and case mix methodology for ambulatory care reporting
Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited Health Information Management program holding the credentials of CHIM and is an active member in good standing with CHIMA
- Must have successfully completed and passed the National Certification Exam through the Canadian Health Information Management Association
- A minimum two years’ experience with ambulatory coding in an acute care facility required
- Ability to type a minimum of 60 wpm accurately and timely
- Bilingualism in French/English an asset
