The Board of Trustees of Edmonton Catholic Schools is seeking a qualified, community-minded individual to serve as an External Member on its Audit and Finance Committee. This is a valuable opportunity to contribute your financial expertise to the governance of a large, mission-driven public-sector organization dedicated to educational excellence.
As a member of the Audit and Finance Committee, you will play a key role in supporting the Board of Trustees in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities. Your expertise will help ensure sound financial management, effective risk mitigation, and compliance with regulatory standards while contributing to the success and well-being of Edmonton’s youth.
This volunteer role presents a unique opportunity to provide strategic financial oversight to a publicly funded school division serving over 50,000 students across more than 90 schools within the City of Edmonton. The term of appointment is four years, with the possibility of renewal. An honorarium will be provided for attendance at committee meetings.
The successful candidate will be required to submit a Police Information Check and Intervention Record Check within six months of selection.
Primary Responsibilities
- Attend a minimum of four committee meetings annually, typically scheduled between September and June.
- Review financial reports and related materials in preparation for each meeting
- Provide independent oversight of financial statements, budgets, and interim financial reports
- Contribute to the Board’s commitment to responsible stewardship, financial accountability, and effective governance
Qualifications and Competencies
The ideal candidate will:
- Hold a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation, or possess equivalent education and experience
- Be independent of Edmonton Catholic Schools
- Have experience in—or a demonstrated interest in—education or the public sector
- Exhibit a strong understanding of financial oversight, risk management, and governance practices
- Show an interest in and support for Catholic education
Preferred, but not required:
- Prior experience on audit committees or boards
- Diverse business or governance background
