About the role

SMS Equipment is seeking an influential and forward‑thinking Director, Artificial & Business Intelligence to lead the organization’s enterprise‑wide artificial intelligence and business intelligence strategy. In this pivotal role, you’ll shape the vision for data‑driven decision‑making, champion responsible AI practices, and drive innovative solutions that deliver measurable value across all business units. As a strategic partner Senior Leaders, business owners, and key external stakeholders, you will guide the development of unified data platforms, oversee transformational AI initiatives, and empower teams through actionable insights and modern analytics capabilities—all aligned to SMS’ digital transformation goals.

Location: Corporate Office in Acheson, AB
Work Arrangement: Hybrid – providing the flexibility to work remotely up to 2 days per week
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the development and execution of SMS Equipment’s enterprise AI & BI roadmap, ensuring alignment with corporate goals and digital transformation priorities.
  • Champion responsible AI practices by establishing governance, ethics, and compliance frameworks that guide safe and effective use of data and machine learning technologies.
  • Oversee the integration and evolution of unified data platforms that enable advanced analytics, seamless model deployment, and scalable insights across the business.
  • Drive adoption and optimization of BI tools—including Microsoft Fabric and Power BI—to empower teams with real‑time visibility into performance and operational trends.
  • Identify, prioritize, and deliver innovative AI use cases—from predictive analytics to workflow automation—that generate measurable business value.
  • Collaborate with IT architecture teams to ensure AI and BI solutions integrate cohesively with enterprise systems and support long‑term technology strategy.
  • Partner with Senior Leaders, business owners, OEMs, customers, and other stakeholders to shape strategy, communicate progress, and accelerate user adoption.
  • Build, mentor, and inspire a high‑performing team of data scientists, BI analysts, engineers, and digital innovators.
  • Establish and maintain strong data quality, classification, and security standards to safeguard information and support confident decision‑making.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement by staying ahead of AI/BI trends and guiding the organization toward modern, scalable practices.

What You Bring

The ideal candidate will bring a proven track record of effective leadership, demonstrated either through direct people management or playing a senior, integral role in leading large-scale, cross-functional implementation initiatives. They will also possess deep expertise in AI, BI, and modern data platforms, paired with a strategic mindset capable of driving enterprise-level transformation. Other qualifications include:

  • Strong knowledge of AI/ML concepts, deployment strategies, and responsible AI practices.
  • Expertise in BI, data modeling, ETL, and analytics, including advanced Power BI capabilities (DAX, T-SQL).
  • Advanced proficiency with Azure-based data and AI platforms, including Microsoft Fabric.
  • Ability to define and execute AI/BI roadmaps aligned with organizational strategy.
  • Experience with data engineering workflows and DevOps/CI/CD processes for AI/BI environments.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to solve complex business problems.
  • Exceptional communication skills, translating technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to lead, develop, and mentor high-performing technical teams.
  • Strong collaboration skills across IT, business units, vendors, and customers.
  • Commitment to data governance, security, privacy, and regulatory compliance.
