About this Opportunity

We are seeking an outstanding Early Childhood Educator with Infant/Toddler Educator BC certification to join the UVic Child Care team in full-time (35 hours per week), continuing positions in our infant care program.

UVic Child Care educators are passionate leaders and advocates for the field, who uphold very high standards and provide strong mentorship to ECEs new to the field. At UVic Child Care:

  • We provide a free in-house professional development program in which we work with our pedagogists who guide inquiry work and research projects, lead seminars and workshops for our ECEs, and provide program support.
  • Our ECEs have published journal articles, held exhibits and presented at a number of conferences and workshops.
  • Our pedagogy, inquiry work and research align with the BC Early Learning Framework (2019). We practice a Common Worlds Framework approach, which considers our ethical relations with others in the Anthropocene- -reflecting on place, the legacies of colonialism, reconciliation, and 21st century environmental inheritances. Note: In addition to the posted salary, ECEs will be paid $4.00 per hour for the BC Provincial Government ECE Wage Enhancement (starting wage of $29.94 + $4.00 per hour = $33.94, after completion of 3-month probation wage is $30.84 + $4.00 per hour = $34.84)

Job Summary

University of Victoria (UVic) Child Care provides on-campus, innovative, creative, inspiring, and responsive early learning and care to young children of UVic full-time students, staff and faculty. The pedagogy for all UVic child care programs is founded on the BC Ministry of Child Care and Education’s BC Early Learning Framework (2019) and the Common Worlds Framework.

The Infant Toddler Early Childhood Educator (ITE) works as a member of the child care team providing early learning and care to children in our infant and toddler child care programs (children who are under 36 months of age). The ITE works in ratio in the program under the supervision of the ITE Supervisor or Program Manager and follows UVic Child Care pedagogy, ethos and policies; the BC Early Learning Framework; the ECEBC Code of Ethics; BC Community Care and Assisted Living Act; and Child Care Licensing Regulations.

All staff who work in UVic Child Care must be immunized in accordance with the childhood immunization schedule The ITE must also possess sufficient stamina for full-time work in a busy full day infant/toddler program. The position is physically demanding and includes repetitive lifting of children who are up to 20 kg, crouching, squatting, bending, standing for long periods of time, supervising outdoor play, walking, and sitting on the floor. Please note that our child care programs spend several hours a day outdoors year round.

Job Requirements

Experience:
Entry level experience for BC certified Infant/Toddler Early Childhood Educator, with demonstrated experience implementing the BC Early Learning Framework (BC Government, 2019) in a group child care setting.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to apply the BC Community Care and Assisted Living Act and BC Child Care Licensing Regulations in practice.
  • Demonstrated ability and strong interest integrating the BC Early Learning Framework (BC Government, 2019) in a child care program including program planning, inquiry work and creating pedagogical narrations.
  • Strong guidance skills for working with infants and toddlers in an inclusive environment.
  • Demonstrated skills for working collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated evidence of ongoing professional development, and commitment to ongoing learning.
  • Commitment to the ECEBC Code of Ethics, including confidentiality and privacy of information.
  • Commitment to valuing the principles of Indigenous reconciliation and diversity and contributing to an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment.
  • Ability to handle emergencies skillfully and calmly and in compliance with BC Child Care Regulations, as well as UVic’s and UVic Child Care Services policies.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances, to multi-task, and to attend to children’s needs while keeping awareness of the whole group.
  • Physically able to repetitively lift children up to 20 kg., crouch, squat, bend, sit on the floor, stand for long periods of time, and walk short distances.
  • Flexibility to work a range of shifts within UVic Child Care Services operating hours, according to operational demands.
  • Proficiency with computer applications (i.e., MS-Office Suite, Adobe Create Suite, content management systems).

Specialized Knowledge/Education:

  • Completion of an Infant/Toddler Early Childhood Education diploma program.
  • Must hold a valid Infant/Toddler Early Childhood Educator Certificate issued by the BC Early Childhood Educator Registry.
  • Strong knowledge of the BC Early Learning Framework (BC Government, 2019) and ability to implement into practice.
  • Strong knowledge of the BC Community Care and Assisted Living Act and current BC Child Care Licensing Regulations.
  • Must hold a valid Emergency Childcare with CPR-B (or C) First Aid certificate.
  • In accordance with the BC Criminal Records Review Act, must have the ability to provide a clear criminal record check.
  • Documentation of compliance in the immunization program per Ministry of Health guidelines (childhood immunizations).
