Senior Civil Project Engineer (Civil Lead) Location: Northern Ontario (Initial assignment in Sudbury, transitioning to Mine Site) Rotation: Hybrid rotational schedule (see below)
About the Opportunity An exciting opportunity is available for a Senior Civil Project Engineer (Civil Lead) to join the Capital Projects team supporting one of Canada's largest mining operations. Reporting directly to the Capital Projects Manager, this role provides technical leadership and project management oversight for the site's civil capital projects. The successful candidate will lead a team of civil engineers, manage external engineering consultants, and oversee projects from concept through commissioning while ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget. This position is best suited for an experienced mining project engineer with strong leadership skills and a proven ability to manage multidisciplinary capital projects in an operating mine environment.
Work Location & Rotation Initial assignment based in Sudbury, Ontario. The initial rotation consists of: Weeks 1 & 2: Onsite in Sudbury (Monday–Thursday), followed by Friday–Sunday off. Week 3: Working remotely (typically Monday–Friday, depending on project requirements). The transition to Mine site is currently anticipated later in the year (approximately December, depending on project needs). Once assigned to the Mine site, the successful candidate will be required to work on site every other week (Monday–Thursday), with the remaining schedule determined based on operational requirements.
Key Responsibilities Act as the Civil Lead for the Capital Projects group. Lead and mentor a team of approximately 5–6 civil engineering personnel, including 3 direct reports. Manage the execution of all civil capital projects across the site. Coordinate engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and project closeout activities. Manage external engineering consultants and review engineering deliverables rather than perform detailed design. Review and approve engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation. Provide technical leadership throughout project planning and execution. Collaborate closely with construction, operations, maintenance, procurement, environmental, and project controls teams. Develop project execution plans, work breakdown structures (WBS), project schedules, and budgets. Monitor project costs and work closely with the Project Cost Controller to maintain budget compliance. Identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies. Support procurement activities including scope development, tender evaluations, contractor selection, and contract administration. Ensure compliance with Ontario regulations, mining standards, engineering best practices, and site safety requirements. Participate in constructability reviews, value engineering initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering. Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation. Minimum 10 years of experience managing civil engineering projects within the mining industry. Experience supporting mining process plant construction, expansion, or major capital projects is strongly preferred. Demonstrated project management experience, including budgeting, scheduling, scope management, and contractor coordination. Strong understanding of civil infrastructure associated with mining operations. Previous experience leading multidisciplinary project teams. Experience managing engineering consultants and EPC/EPCM contractors. Strong knowledge of Ontario Building Code, Occupational Health & Safety legislation, and mining regulations. Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills. Previous experience working at remote mining operations is considered a strong asset.
Preferred Experience Process plant capital project experience. Mine expansion projects. Brownfield or operating mine environments. EPC/EPCM project delivery experience. Experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D, Navisworks, and related engineering software.
