Volunteer Communications Team Manager (unpaid)
Are you passionate about environmental sustainability and skilled in bringing people and ideas together through clear, compelling communication? We’re looking for a Volunteer Communications Team Manager to help lead the charge in telling our story, supporting our programs, and inspiring action across our community.
In this role, you’ll work closely with our Strategic Communications Manager, Operations Manager, and Executive Director to implement the organization’s marketing and communications strategy. You’ll also manage a talented and passionate team of volunteer creatives and communicators, helping them stay motivated, grow their skills, and deliver on key organizational priorities.
As the Communications Team Manager you would be responsible for:
Planning & Leadership
- Collaborate with the Strategic Communications Manager, Operations Manager, and Executive Director to design and execute our overall communications and marketing strategy
- Maintain clear guidelines for how the communications team operates
- Participate in leadership-level planning and discussions as a member of the Functional Area Management team
- Support Program Managers and the Strategic Communications Manager by helping to execute marketing plans
Team Management & Volunteer Coordination
- Lead and support a team of volunteer marketers, writers, and designers
- Encourage growth and engagement within your team through clear expectations, regular check-ins, and mentorship
- Assign projects based on team capacity, deadlines, and strategic importance
- Foster collaboration and team spirit within a remote volunteer setting
Project Oversight & Quality Control
- Manage incoming requests for marketing support from other teams, setting priorities and timelines
- Coordinate and oversee marketing campaigns and content across channels
- Review and edit written content including blog posts, and web materials for accuracy, tone, and consistency
- Provide day-to-day guidance and support to volunteers working on content and design task.
As the successful candidate you have:
- A background in communications, marketing, digital media, or a related field
- Experience leading teams or managing projects
- Excellent writing and editing skills with a strong eye for detail and consistency
- A collaborative approach and the ability to adapt to changing needs and timelines
- Experience working cross functionally on multiple teams and bridging ideas together
- Excellent organizational skills
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Experience with volunteer management, preferred
