Position Information**:**
Full-time Support Staff Position Opportunity (Temporary Employee Replacement (see Appendix D of collective agreement), March 2026 to June 2026
Payband: I; Starting Rate: $40.39; Four Year Rate: $46.64
Department: Faculty of Skilled Trades & Apprenticeship
Hours: 35 hours per week (1) one hour lunch; Mon – Fri (8:00am – 4:00pm)
Reporting To: Manager, Academic Operations
Campus Location: Whitby
Vacancy Status: Existing vacancy
Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will ensure that the power tools and stationary equipment in the Carpentry Shop of the Whitby Campus are in proper and safe working condition by means of preventative maintenance schedules, trouble shooting and repairs.
- Planning, construction and maintenance of specialized technical teaching aids.
- Support faculty and students through hands‑on demonstrations, tutoring, and technical guidance (non‑evaluative).
- Provide shop demonstrations requiring independent technical expertise.
- Assist with materials, project preparation, and resource planning for all carpentry programs.
- May be requested to demonstrate practical assignments due to larger class size and need for safety. Will not be required to evaluate students but only supervise shop operation.
- Develop and maintain shop and lab policies, ensuring safe and effective use of facilities.
- Plan and perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and documentation for shop equipment; coordinate certified third‑party service when needed.
- Coordinate, plan and establish inventory schedules and records. Evaluate and perform inventory duties, pricing quotes, ordering and purchasing of materials and equipment ensuring quality and efficiency of budget. Receiving incoming supplies and equipment.
- Provide technical support to faculty, administration, and support staff across carpentry programs.
- Ensure compliance with college shop/lab policies using sound judgment.
- Provide backup support to other disciplines, technologists, and shop operations.
Qualifications:
- General Carpenter RSE (Red Seal Endorsement) and/or Certificate of Qualification General Carpenter; Cabinet Maker RSE (Red Seal Endorsement) and/or Certificate of Qualification Cabinet Maker.
- Minimum five years’ experience in the trade.
- Must be self-directed with strong organizational and time management skills in planning, executing, and completing tasks.
- Ability to be clear and concise with verbal and written communication skills.
- The ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
- Proficient in general computing skills, including Excel.
- Experience in inventory control and purchasing procedures.
- Forklift operator certification an asset, it is an expectation to attain this within the first three months of employment.
- Be familiar with the Ontario Building Code.
- Knowledge of Energy Efficient Construction (Green Building Principles) and Sustainable Construction an asset.
- Experience working with other trades.
- Comprehensive knowledge of industry safety standards such as WHMIS, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Fall Arrest.
