Job Description Area Managers lead their store team and up to four additional stores to provide care, expertise and memorable moments for every Devoted Pet Lover. The position is responsible for ensuring consistently great execution which allows us to invest in meaningful time with our customers. Area Managers and their Animal Care Enthusiasts (ACEs) recommend the best products and services to create the healthiest, most playful life for all pets. They take action and accountability to drive profit to fuel our growth and future as the Devoted Pet Lover’s life-cycle partner. As leaders in our organization, Area Managers create an inspired, informed, and supportive working environment and celebrate the moments of fun in each day. The Area Manager is accountable for all operations in their area and for representing their stores in surrounding communities. They also oversee all operations, including the of up to four additional stores in their geographic area. Area Managers prioritize Safety, Compassion, Expertise and Efficiency in all they do, and they live by and coach to our Core Beliefs.

Salary range: $60,000-$65,000

Essential Responsibilities Safety – Operate in a way that builds trust with our customers, pets, and ACEs.

  • Prioritize the safety of ACEs and Devoted Pet Lovers by maintaining a safe and clean store environment.
  • Ensure completion of monthly Safe & Ready report for own store and additional stores.
  • Ensure the proper health, feeding, care and well-being of all pets sold in store.
  • Effectively open and close the store while following company procedures.

Compassion – Communicate and act from the heart with genuine care and courtesy.

  • Greet and acknowledge every person and pet with respect.
  • Approach each interaction with appreciation and genuine care.
  • Provide positive, consistent and solution-oriented service.
  • Approach all interactions with ACEs and Devoted Pet Lovers with respect, appreciation and responsiveness.
  • Plan and execute meaningful community events both inside and outside the store.
  • Develop partnerships with rescue agencies and other local animal care providers.

Expertise – Provide knowledge in an understanding and informative way.

  • Ask questions and listen to Devoted Pet Lover’s needs to help recommend the best products and services.
  • Drive sales, customer service, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to achieve overall Store Performance goals.
  • Stay current with pet industry standards through the company learning system and on the job training.
  • Maintain the stability and reputation of the store.
  • Oversee all in-store Services (self-wash, grooming, etc.), ensure standards of safety and grow the business.
  • Complete financial reporting and adhere to operational metrics standards.

Efficiency – Use time and resources responsibly.

  • Implement efficient and clearly communicated operational processes including placing orders, maintaining appropriate inventory, completing floor moves, and completing mandatory paperwork and reports.
  • Execute all strategic corporate initiatives.
  • Follow, communicate and enforce all company policies and procedures.
  • Implement Marketing initiatives at a company and local level, following communication and branding guidelines.
  • Use the Point of Sale (POS) system according to company guidelines

Leadership – Create an inspired, informed, and supportive working environment.

  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and positive attitude in the workplace, including conducting oneself in an appropriate manner when communicating verbally and in writing.
  • Hire and invest in people committed to becoming the best Store Managers and ACEs for our customers.
  • Develop Store Managers and ACEs for current and future success through coaching, performance management and on-the-job training using Tell Show Do Review.
  • Write and deliver Performance Appraisals, Individual Development Plans (IDPs) and Opportunities for Improvement when appropriate for Store Managers and ACEs in own store.
  • Effectively balance workload through delegating, coaching, supervising and motivating team of ACEs.
  • Manage a multi-unit environment, ensuring all stores meet goals and adhere to standards.
  • Promote Store Manager and ACE engagement by adjusting leadership style to individual motivation and needs.
  • Recognize successful performance through STAR feedback.
  • Participates in Leadership meetings with District Teams.

Experience, Education, Certifications (List minimum required to enter the role.)

  • High School Degree or equivalent, College degree preferred
  • At least 5 years in retail environment, 2+ years in a management position
  • Working knowledge of POS system(s)
  • Demonstrated interpersonal & sales skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team

Job Requirements

  • Ability to manage in a multi-unit environment.
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule according to business needs, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Must be available for after hours support to area stores.
  • A valid driver’s license may be required.
