Position Description

SickKids AI is leading a transformative enterprise-wide program to deliver leading edge, data driven, individualized paediatric care and operations through AI. Known as SickKids AI Service, or SKAI Service, our team is at the forefront of applying large language models (LLMs) and intelligent agent systems to high-impact clinical and operational challenges. With a keen focus on sustainable and responsible deployment, you will partner with SickKids' renowned clinicians and engineers to design, build, and deploy LLM-powered solutions enabling us to realize SickKids's vision of Healthier Children. Here's What You'll Get to Do

  • Work with some of the best clinicians, data scientists, and software engineers in the world
  • Design, build, and evaluate LLM-powered applications including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, prompt engineering frameworks, and multi-step agent workflows
  • Build end-to-end data and inference pipelines to support LLM and agent systems, with strong quality control, safety checks, and bias assessment
  • Rapidly prototype and evaluate LLM-based solutions for clinical and operational use cases, assessing feasibility and model behaviour
  • Evaluate and iterate on agent architectures, tool use patterns, and LLM orchestration strategies to meet clinical requirements

Here's What You'll Need

  • Candidate should have a background in computer science, machine learning, or a related field, with hands-on experience building LLM-powered applications or AI agents, and a strong understanding of modern NLP (Natural Language Processing) and generative AI techniques with**:**
  • A degree in computer science, data science, or equivalent, with a focus on machine learning or NLP, with a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience (including LLM or generative AI projects)
  • Practical experience designing and deploying LLM applications, including prompt engineering, and RAG)
  • Excellent project and time management skills and a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders across a large institution
  • Outstanding problem solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent writing skills to help with development of grants and papers
  • Proficiency in Python and familiarity with the LLM/agent development ecosystem (e.g. LangChain, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel, or similar frameworks)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills along with strong interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated creativity and latitude in problem solving, including the ability to prioritize and execute multiple competing tasks
  • Demonstrated commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives.

This will make you extra competitive

  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft CoPilot and Azure AI Foundry, including building and deploying LLM-based solutions within the Microsoft ecosystem.
  • Familiarity with other leading LLM platforms and APIs such as OpenAI/ChatGPT, Anthropic Claude, or Google Gemini, and experience comparing and integrating multiple model providers.
  • Experience building autonomous or semi-autonomous agents using frameworks such as AutoGen, CrewAI, LangGraph, or similar; including tool use, memory, and multi-agent coordination.
  • Experience applying LLMs to clinical or healthcare domains, including working with EHR data, medical terminology, or health-specific fine-tuning and safety considerations
  • History of publishing papers and contributing to scientific research
