Job Synopsis
MCC is the relief, development and peace agency of the Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches in North America. MCCS staff reflect MCC’s mission, beliefs, and values in the workplace and in interactions with individuals, agencies and businesses in the broader community**.**
This role requires 8 weeks of 0.8 FTE (32 hours/week) between June 1st and July 25th, 2026.
Funding for this position is provided by Service Canada with emphasis on providing youth summer work experiences which can represent important pathways facilitating future transitions to the workforce. As such, this is a term position ending July 25th, 2026. To be eligible, candidates must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
The MCC Thrift Shop movement was started 50 years ago in Altona, Manitoba. MCCS Thrift Shops seek to be a friendly,caring presence in their community, showing value and respectto all. Practicing and promoting faithful stewardship and care for God’s creation and raising funds for MCC are also key components to the mission statement of the Thrift Shops.
The Shop Assistant is accountable to the Retail Manager who will provide direction for the tasks, duties, and responsibilities of the Shop Assistant. This is a part-time, term position ending July 25th, 2026.
Daily work hours are typically 8:30am – 5:00pm, including various Saturdays per month, with the final schedule determined by the General Manager.

- Customer service and sales experience and/or the willingness to learn.
- Solid organizational expertise demonstrated ability to learn procedures, systems, and routines.
- Precise attention to detail
- Ability to work flexible hours, including day and weekend shifts within hours of retail operations.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
- Requires about 5 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday.
- Ability to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and able to reach upper shelves with use of a stool or a ladder when necessary.
- Written and verbal communication skills within today's technologies
- Self-motivated, able to work independently, and willing to take initiative, while at the same time responding to the direction of the co-managers and management team
- Passionate and enthusiastic about interacting with customers and volunteers; demonstrated interpersonal skills with people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds; friendly and outgoing.
- Satisfactory criminal record check, required.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting MCC’s values of peacemaking, respect for all and unconditional love through daily interactions with volunteers, donors, and customers.

Follow the MCCS Thrift Shop Mission Statement, and the wishes and directives of the Shop Board, under the guidance of the Manager.

Communicate the MCC mission and values and the mission of the Thrift Shop in a positive manner to donors, volunteers, and customers.

Demonstrate positive attitude, integrity, and honesty.

Demonstrate enthusiasm about working with a variety of people, both volunteers and customers, and acknowledging the "customer comes first" approach.

Communicate clearly and accurately to ensure effective store operations.

Help to sustain a clean and properly merchandised store appearance.

Adapt to feedback and opportunities for improvement.

Develop and display knowledge of all products and MCC's mission statement.

Assist with social media campaigns, where possible and at the direction of management.

Clean and organize the sales floor, storage areas, cupboards, and bathrooms.

Assist in the daily operation of the shop including:
- Sort, tag, price and put out donations.
- Answer the phone, in store public relations.
- Assist and support customers,
- Assist and support volunteers,
- Operate the cash register, etc.

Assist with moving, loading & cleaning of donations.

Model non-violent peacemaking in the workplace and community.

Carry out other duties which arise in the work environment, under the Manager’s direction.
Note: Physical labour is involved in this position, sometimes requiring the ability to lift up to 50 pounds
