ABOUT THE POSITION Reporting to the roads lead hand, the Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a variety of heavy equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of municipal infrastructure. This position performs essential duties related to snow removal, road maintenance, and other tasks as assigned. The Heavy Equipment Operator must possess a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and providing excellent public service.
WORK PERFORMED Equipment Operation
-
Safely and efficiently operate a variety of heavy equipment.

Conduct pre- and post-operation equipment inspections, completing required documentation.
-
Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures, including traffic control measures and personal protective equipment requirements.

Report any equipment malfunctions or maintenance needs to the appropriate supervisor or mechanic.
Road Maintenance and Repair
-
Perform road maintenance and repair tasks.
-
Apply abrasives to road surfaces for winter maintenance and dust control materials in the summer.
-
Operate equipment to load and unload materials, such as gravel, asphalt, and snow.
-
Maintain accurate records of materials usage.
Snow Removal
-
Perform snow removal operations, including plowing, sanding, and salting.
-
Coordinate with other snow removal personnel to ensure efficient and effective operations.
-
Adhere to designated snow routes and disposal locations.
Equipment Maintenance
-
Perform routine equipment maintenance tasks, such as lubricating, fueling, and cleaning equipment.

Assist mechanics with more complex repairs as needed.
-
Ensure all equipment is properly stored and secured at the end of each shift.
Customer Service and Public Relations
-
Respond to public inquiries and concerns in a courteous and professional manner.
-
Communicate effectively with other municipal staff and contractors.
-
Promote a positive image of the Municipality of Jasper in all interactions with the public.
-
Adhere to all municipality regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
-
Your resume and cover letter must clearly describe how you meet the following qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.
-
Minimum 5 years of experience operating heavy equipment.
-
WHMIS Certification.
-
Standard First Aid/CPR Certification.
-
Class 1 Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement.
-
Experience with graders, loaders, excavators, snow removal equipment, dump truck and street sweepers.
-
Knowledge of safety procedures used in the heavy equipment operation and maintenance industry.
-
Knowledge of Alberta traffic control standards and procedures.
-
Working knowledge of road construction and maintenance practices.
-
Equivalencies may be considered on the basis of one year experience for one year of education.
-
Candidates with lower qualifications are encouraged to apply and may be considered at a lower classification and pay.
