Role Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Cost Control, the Senior Project Controls Specialist will play a key role in implementing effective project controls processes and systems. This role is responsible for developing and setting up projects within the cost control system, as well as maintaining and handling advanced reporting, analytics, dashboards, and other business intelligence (BI) solutions for Teck projects, utilizing project cost management tools and systems.

The Senior Project Controls Specialist will focus on project controls processes and systems, and will play a dual role within the Projects Group—supporting multiple projects concurrently. Approximately 50% of their time will be dedicated to core project controls functions, while the remaining 50% will be working on data analysis and reporting to support project performance and decision-making.

This position is based in the Vancouver Office with occasional travel to project sites as the need arises to facilitate project setup, maintenance, and training in our project cost management system (Unifier), and standardized reporting methodologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures

  • Collaborate and communicate with stakeholders and project teams to understand business requirements and translate them into technical specifications, presenting findings and reports clearly and effectively
  • Extract, transform, and load data from various sources to build comprehensive datasets for analysis
  • Develop and implement data models, reports, and dashboards that deliver actionable insights to support decision-making
  • Monitor and solve data quality issues, ensuring accuracy and reliability of reports
  • Look for opportunities for improvement by identifying and addressing gaps in the current systems and reporting through problem-solving and implementation of solutions
  • Deliver training and support to end-users on Power BI tools and guidelines including analysis of project performance data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement
  • Deliver training and support to end-users on project cost management system(s) and guidelines
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of project reporting systems and processes
  • Assist in setup of the project cost management system and provide ongoing maintenance and support as needed for project teams
  • Prepare and present regular project status reports to management and partners
  • Assist with the development, modification and/or implementation of project reporting and project setup techniques and methods
  • Transfer learning from actual project reporting and project setup implementation into the improvement of company guidelines and procedures
  • Support on setting up projects in Unifier
  • Assist in developing and maintaining project budgets and forecasts
  • Supervise and control project costs to ensure alignment with budget parameters
  • Prepare detailed cost reports and financial summaries for senior management
  • Support in identifying cost-saving opportunities and implementing effective cost control measures
  • Support in conducting variance analysis and recommending corrective actions
  • Support in identifying and assessing project risks, developing vital mitigation plans as needed
  • Support in the implementation of quality control measures to ensure all project deliverables meet established standards
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior project controls staff on all aspect of Project Controls
  • Develop and implement onboarding programs for new team members, fostering a collaborative team environment
  • Develop, maintain, and handle advanced reporting, analytics, dashboards, and BI solutions using Power BI and other project cost management tools
  • Extract, transform, and Load (ETL) data from various sources to create comprehensive datasets for analysis
  • Provide training and support to end-users on Power BI tools and project cost management systems
  • Look for opportunities for improvement by leveraging data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for project performance enhancement

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in engineering, accounting, finance or business, or diploma in a trade
  • 7+ years of project cost control experience, with preference to mining/industrial projects
  • 3+ years of project cost control experience in an Owner’s role
  • 2+ years of field experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in project management and project controls techniques and principles
  • Direct knowledge and experience of Project Controls interfaces with other functional groups
  • Strong knowledge of the engineering and construction industry
  • Experience in both Study and Execution stages of projects is required, including project setup
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Experience creating dashboards and reporting using PowerBI
  • Strong skills in SQL for querying databases and managing data
  • Experience using cost control software such as Unifier, PRISM or Cleopatra is considered an asset
  • Experience using a scheduling tool like MS Project or Primavera 6 is considered an asset
  • CPA, PEng or AScT registration considered an asset
  • CCP, CEP, PMP or other similar designations considered an asset
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is considered a significant asset

Pay Range: CAD $135,000 - $167,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
