Camp YMCA Kanawana is Quebec’s oldest residential camp and is currently undergoing an exciting period of renewal. Our goal is to combine our long-standing tradition of YMCA value-based camping with innovative, leading-edge programming positioning YMCA Kanawana as Quebec’s leader in environmental education.
Responsibilities
- Plan, lead, and evaluate 4, 6, 8, 16, or 21-day river canoe trips with teenagers aged 13 to 17 years old and with young adults.
- Implement a leadership program, survival skills, and Leave No Trace training while on trip.
- Ensure participants’ safety, well-being, and personal growth throughout the expedition.
Competencies
- Commitment to Organizational Vision and Values: Demonstrates and promotes understanding and appreciation of the YMCA’s mission, vision, values, and strategic objectives.
- Self-Management: Works independently within established parameters and communicates relevant issues effectively to the supervisor.
- Leadership: Able to guide and motivate others (and oneself) to achieve results and handle team development challenges.
- Coaching and Development: Commits to supporting continuous learning and growth for participants, volunteers, staff, and self.
- Relationship Building: Works proactively to build positive relationships with participants, peers, and volunteers.
- Communication: Communicates clearly, thoroughly, and promptly, fostering collaboration and shared goals.
Qualifications
- Wilderness First Aid (Wilderness First Responder – 80h considered an asset)
- Minimum two years of experience in a residential camp or outdoor guiding position
- Whitewater ORCA/FQCK Level 2 certification
- Current and valid Police Record Check (mandatory)
- Assets: Bronze Cross, NLS, Leave No Trace Instructor certification, Class 4B driver’s license
- Whitewater Rescue Technician (WRT) certification is an asset
- Fluency in spoken and written French (required).
- Fluency in spoken and written English (required based on operational needs related to clientele and communications).
