Join our Enterprise Analytics team and make an impact in Canadian healthcare
Scarborough Health Network (SHN) serves one of Canada’s most diverse communities through three hospitals and eight satellite sites. We offer comprehensive programs—including North America’s largest nephrology program—and are the cardiac care and spine centre for Scarborough and nearby areas. As a research hospital and teaching site affiliated with the University of Toronto and other institutions, we help train future health care professionals.
Enterprise Analytics is a department within one of Ontario's largest community hospitals. The team provides analytical tools and insights to healthcare leaders to support their decision-making processes. We are seeking a skilled and motivated Data Scientist to join our team. This role is critical in transforming complex healthcare data into actionable insights that improve patient outcomes, optimize operations, and support strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data science, statistic, and healthcare systems.
Overview
- Apply expertise in machine learning, natural language processing, and data visualization techniques to analyze large and complex data sets in support of SHN strategic initiatives.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including program directors, program analysts, clinicians, and researchers.
- Present findings and recommendations to stakeholders such as senior leadership teams, program directors, and health care providers through clear visualizations and reports.
Responsibilities
- Collect, clean, and analyze health care data from various sources such as enterprise data warehouse, electronic health record (EPIC), surveys and other health care data.
- Develop predictive models and statistical analyses to identify trends, forecast outcomes, and support clinical and operational decision-making.
- Evaluate and validate the performance and impact of the data-driven solutions using appropriate metrics and methods.
- Create and maintain workflow to automate and streamline the data processing and modeling tasks.
- Present and communicate the data analysis results and recommendations to various audiences such as senior leadership team, program directors and clinical leaders using effective visualization and reports.
Required skills and qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Data Science, Computer Sciences, Statistics, Health Informatics, Engineering, or related fields
- 2+ years of experience in data science, analytics or machine learning, preferably in a healthcare setting.
- Proficiency with data mining, mathematics, and statistical analysis such as knowledge of statistical tests, distributions, regression, maximum likelihood estimations
- Proficiency in programming languages including Python, R, SQL, SAS and its data science libraries, such as pandas, scikit-learn
- Advanced experience in pattern recognition and predictive modelling
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, fast pace, research-oriented environment that has several concurrent projects
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and a collaborative and proactive attitude
- Pride in doing great work, a mindset of taking things to the finish line, and attention to detail.
Preferred skills and qualifications
- Previous healthcare experience including knowledge of CIHI datasets such as DAD, NACRS, CCRS, NRS, OMHRS, HCRS).
- Experience with data extract/structure in EPIC.
- Hands-on experience with any business intelligence (BI) reporting tool and cloud platform, especially Microsoft Power BI, Microsoft Fabric and Microsoft Azure.
- Familiarity with clinical workflows and healthcare operations.
- Knowledge of population health, value-based care, or epidemiology.
- Working toward or complete data science related certifications such as Microsoft certified Azure Data Scientist Associate, PowerBI Data Analyst Associate, Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate
