Position Title

Senior Enterprise Applications Specialist

Position Summary

The Senior Enterprise Applications Specialist is responsible for managing, supporting, and developing Red Deer Polytechnic’s core enterprise applications across academic, administrative, and student service functions. This includes installing, configuring, integrating, upgrading, and maintaining applications while ensuring security, performance, and licensing compliance.

The specialist also contributes to application research, design, and enhancement initiatives that align with institutional goals. Acting as a liaison between IT teams, vendors, and end-users, the Specialist works closely with clients to ensure consistent communication, timely issue resolution, and optimal system performance. Responsibilities also include developing and continuously improving custom applications, reports, and scripts to address software gaps, delivering user training, and supporting data analysis and reporting to enable informed decision-making.

Position Responsibilities

Application Administration, Support and Development

  • Provides daily support for business enterprise systems which include but are not limited to the SIS; LMS; CRM; Scheduling, Experiential Learning, Library Asset Management, Curriculum Management; and Business Automation software; Office 365 applications, among others. This includes monitoring system logs, troubleshooting, handling routine or emergency production issues, and escalating concerns to software providers when required.
  • Administers and maintains web based, SaaS and client-server applications.
  • Anticipates, assesses, and readily adapts to changing priorities, effectively working and communicating in a changing environment.
  • Provides feedback to users and processes special requests.
  • Works with business units to define requirements for software-based projects.
  • Develops and delivers tactical requests and enhancements including data extracts, new process setups, and offering improvements to the support business processes.
  • Administers software licenses, assigning appropriate roles and access according to current policies and/or best practices for effective business continuity.
  • Inspects and resolves system problems quickly and efficiently while maintaining system security, data integrity and minimal service interruption.

Technology Research and Implementation

  • Leads the evaluation, installation, configuration, and deployment of new enterprise application systems and enhancements, ensuring system integrity, scalability, and alignment with institutional goals.
  • Proactively seeks out potential projects and recommends solutions to complex institutional problems.
  • Designs and develops in-house applications and systems using industry-standard tools and programming languages to address identified gaps and improve operational efficiency.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders and internal teams to define requirements, lead testing efforts, and ensure successful implementation of new solutions.
  • Analyzes client requests and business needs, estimates project scope and timelines, and drives solution design and delivery.
  • Serves as a technical lead on cross-functional project teams, guiding development and implementation of enterprise-level solutions.
  • Conducts software product evaluations and feasibility studies and provides strategic recommendations to leadership through participation in RFI/RFP processes.
  • Leads documentation efforts, testing plans, and change management activities to ensure continuity and compliance throughout the Software Development Lifecycle.

Data Analysis and Reporting Support

  • Leads the design and transformation of raw data into actionable formats to support decision-making across academic and administrative functions.
  • Consults with stakeholders to define reporting needs and align data outputs with business objectives.
  • Reviews and interprets business requirements to propose data-driven solutions that address operational challenges.
  • Conducts cost-benefit analyses for alternative approaches to data handling, reporting, and system enhancements.
  • Analyzes documentation and technical specifications of new applications to assess functionality and integration potential.
  • Develops and recommends data models and reporting frameworks to support strategic initiatives.

Training and Documentation Coordination

  • Coordinates and delivers orientation and training sessions for individual users, teams, and departments on supported systems and processes.

  • Develops and maintains comprehensive training materials, technical documentation, and user guides to ensure consistent understanding and adoption of systems.

  • Communicates system changes and enhancements to users, tailoring messaging for technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Manages and promotes continuous cross-training within the IT team to ensure shared expertise, reduce single points of failure, and support operational resilience.

  • Oversees the creation and maintenance of documentation repositories to ensure accessibility and completeness for business continuity and audit readiness.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of technologies including but not limited to: relational databases, data/process modeling, database reporting, ETL tools, data extraction, PowerShell, UNIX, LINUX, SQL, PL/SQL, Java, XML, HTML, Python, C#.

  • Over 5 years of extensive experience administering and integrating local and cloud-based enterprise applications and systems such as Learning Management Systems, Curriculum Management, Web Conferencing, Office 365, MS Power Platform, Azure, Ellucian Banner, and Oracle tools.

  • Strong understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), including planning, testing, deployment, and maintenance phases.

  • Expertise in internet data security, digital product usability standards, and web content management.

  • Proven experience in client-facing roles, including vendor engagement, requirements gathering, and solution design.

  • Experience designing, implementing, and optimizing solutions using low-code platforms such as Microsoft Power Platform, including Power Apps, Power Automate, and related tools, to support business process automation and system integration.

  • Experience architecting and implementing modern application solutions, including secure integrations and scalable design.

  • Ability to write efficient, optimized, well-documented, and sustainable code across multiple platforms.

  • Skilled in translating complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences and stakeholders.

  • Experience contributing to cross-functional teams or committees, promoting service improvement and operational excellence.

  • Ability to build and manage systems plans, including operational procedures, implementation roadmaps, task prioritization, progress monitoring, and quality assurance.
