Compensation Range

$35.30 - $50.72 CAD Hourly

Job Summary

Student Communications Services (SCS) provides communications leadership and support to UBC's Office of the Vice-President, Students (VPSO) and Enrolment Services (ES). This role is part of a cross-functional team that works collaboratively to build and maintain a student-centered digital and communications ecosystem for UBC Vancouver students across web, social, email, blog, and other platforms.

The Graphic Designer produces high-quality visual design work for digital and print touchpoints for UBC students on the Vancouver campus.

Organizational Status

The Graphic Designer is a member of the Student Communications Services (SCS) team. This position reports to the Senior Manager, Communications and Marketing.

An integral member of the Student Communications Services Team, works in close collaboration with SCS, VPSO, and ES teams.

Work Performed

· Collaborates with SCS Digital Marketing and Communications teams, other designers, and developers.

  • Develops creative campaign concepts, print and digital collateral, event graphics and infographics from a creative brief with the direction of the Senior Manager, Communications and Marketing.
  • Develops and presents multiple conceptual design comps for critique and approval.
  • Responsible for familiarizing themselves with the photography archive to recommend appropriate images when needed by team members.
  • Prepares final production ready files for both print and web.
  • Manages digital assets through an organized logical directory system.
  • Develops social media graphics and illustrations for promotional assets and toolkits.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position represents the VPSO, ES, and the University as a whole, and is required to exercise professional judgment, collegiality, and initiative while undertaking all responsibilities and developing relationships and partnerships.

Incorrect decisions or judgment will directly affect UBC's reputation with students, faculty, staff, partners and the broader community. Inappropriate actions, errors in performance or indiscretions in judgment can negatively impact the VPSO’s working relationships and credibility with a range of critical internal and external partners, may result in legal action or negative public relations, incur inappropriate costs, and/or jeopardize the unit's reputation.

Supervision Received

Works under general guidance and supervision of the Senior Manager, Communications and Marketing.

Works with members of SCS, VPSO, and ES to achieve the communication goals of the portfolio and its units.

Must be self-directed, able to handle project priorities, and work independently. Shows initiative and creativity in reaching set goals. Work is reviewed periodically to assess performance and ensure achievement of project goals.

Supervision Given
This role does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications
Three-year Graphic Design program. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of design principles, hierarchy, problem solving, layout, typography, color, photo art direction.
  • Strong understanding of design principles.
  • Able to adhere to established brand style guidelines and to consistently refresh and update styles to stay current.
  • Understands and connects with UBC student audience.
  • Considers user needs in all areas of design work.
  • Comfortable receiving feedback, open to suggestions and willing to take direction from the Senior Manager, Communications and Marketing and team members.
  • Must be able to use Adobe Creative Cloud applications Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word.
  • Photography and photo editing skills and experience with Lightroom is a plus.
  • Creativity and flexibility to adapt to changing environments, capacity to be diplomatic and to provide thoughtful solutions to design challenges.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, ability to work within a team environment.
  • Must be able to multitask and be detail oriented.
