About the role
At SMS Equipment, our Assistant Controller is responsible for the accuracy of the Company’s financial records and ensuring compliance with appropriate accounting standards. The Assistant Controller is responsible for the timely and accurate completion of the month end close process, financial reporting, account reconciliations, audit preparation and directing the work of the accounting staff. This role provides leadership and guidance to 4 direct reports, including the Accounts Payable team.
Location: Corporate Office in Acheson, AB
Salary: Up to $120,000 per year
Work arrangement: Hybrid – work in office Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
What you’ll do:
Leadership
- Provides day-to-day leadership including advice, guidance, and coordination of team members.
- Motivates and encourages staff development through coaching, mentoring, and training.
- Maintains a positive, respectful, and professional environment for all department members.
Financial Reporting
- Responsible for the timely and accurate completion of the Company’s financial reporting on a standalone and consolidated basis.
- Annual preparation of external financial statements and notes.
- Responsible for keeping abreast of new accounting pronouncements including analyzing their impact and being a key point of contact for accounting policy research, and advice to all departments.
- Prepare accounting research of complex and non-complex issues as they arise.
- Ensure the integrity of the company’s ERP records as it relates to the financial information
Audit & Tax
- Plan and execute the year end and interim audits in a timely manner and be the main point of contact for auditors, ensuring a positive relationship.
- Strive to continuously improve the efficiency of the yearly audit
- Support the taxation process from planning, installments, and preparation of the corporate tax returns.
- Overview of accurate and timely filing of GST/HST, and other US sales tax for all subsidiaries.
Continuous Improvements
- Develops accounting processes to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and availability of information to stakeholders.
- Strives to continuously improve the effectiveness and efficiency within the corporate accounting and accounts payable department.
- Accountable to ensure the ongoing development of the Companies internal controls system.
What you bring:
The successful candidate will possess an Undergraduate Business Degree with an Accounting Designation (CPA) paired with a minimum of 7 years experience in controllership and/or auditing, with at least 2 years of supervisory experience. Additional requirements include:
- Extensive knowledge in accounting principles and practices including International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and/or Accounting Standards for Private Enterprise (ASPE)
- Strong critical thinking skills, the ability to evaluate and assess value added business needs.
- Previous management or supervisory experience with effective leadership skills to motivate, manage and develop staff.
- Collaborative team player who can cultivate strong relationships and influence others.
- Strong computer skills with an advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and experience with ERP systems.
- Demonstrated experience in preparing financial statements for management.
- Experience in managing a financial audit.
- Experience with an account reconciliation software would be considered an asset
