Compensation Details:

  • Salaries will be based on qualifications and experience and may fall within the following ranges:
    • Underwriter 15: $65,172 - $86,898 + a performance based incentive.
    • Underwriter 16: $74,297 - $99,063 + a performance based incentive.
    • Underwriter 17: $84,698 - $112,931 + a performance based incentive.
    • Underwriter 18 : $96,557 - $128,743 + a performance based incentive.

Location:

  • Export Development Canada operates in a hybrid work environment, currently requiring employees to work in the office2days per week.(subject to change)
  • This role will be performed from one of EDC’s regional hubs in Montreal, Laval, Brossard or Quebec City.
  • Relocation assistance is available for candidates who meet the eligibility criteria.

Team overview

EDC’s Credit Insurance Underwriting group is looking for dynamic and motivated professionals to assist Canadian companies go, grow and succeed internationally. Working in close collaboration with both internal and external partners, the successful candidate(s) will facilitate international trade by helping our customers protect themselves against the risk of non-payment from foreign companies.

In the underwriting role you will be relied upon to engage with EDC’s customers to understand their needs, structure insurance coverage and assess counterparty creditworthiness to achieve the optimal balance between customer-centricity and EDC’s business requirements. In addition, you will, actively participate in the attainment of the group’s performance and growth objectives and be engaged in continuous improvement in order to remove obstacles, enhance the work environment and improve the customer experience.

We are currently recruiting for multiple permanent underwriter roles. This poster may also be used to fill future hiring needs over the next 12 months.

What you will be doing:

  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships to deliver exceptional service, generate new business, and retain existing clients; role includes regular customer visits.
  • Engage with customers to understand their needs, design optimal insurance coverage structures, and define appropriate terms and conditions for prospects and clients.
  • Manages the complete credit insurance underwriting process, from structuring and issuing new business to ongoing management and renewal of existing policies.
  • Provide ongoing client support, serving as a trusted subject matter expert on credit insurance solutions.
  • Assess the creditworthiness of foreign counterparties through comprehensive financial and credit analysis, including liquidity, leverage and maturity profiles, profitability, cash-flow management, third-party or bank support, as well as qualitative factors such as competitiveness, market conditions, demand elasticity, and industry trends.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of loss mitigation strategies for credits showing signs of increased risk.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives aimed at streamlining processes and enhancing operational efficiency.
  • Proactively identify issues and champion enhancements to existing processes and practices.
  • Support the overall performance of the program by consistently striving for excellence and high-quality execution.

What we are looking for:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Commerce or other relevant discipline (for all levels).
  • 2 years (Underwriter level 15), 2 - 5 years (Underwriter level 16) or greater than 5 (Underwriter level 17), greater than 8 (Underwriter level 18) of experience in insurance underwriting or related financial services experience.
  • Demonstrated strength in delivering high-quality client service to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong experience analyzing, interpreting, and assessing financial statements, supported by solid financial analysis capabilities.
  • Proven ability to structure and negotiate complex solutions, bringing a proactive, solutions-oriented, and innovative mindset.
  • Comfortable engaging with Exporters at the Executive and Senior Leadership level to assess needs and recommend appropriate structures.
  • High degree of personal agility, including the ability to:
    • demonstrate resilience and openness to change within a dynamic business environment;
    • adapt approaches as circumstances and requirements evolve;
    • operate effectively in ambiguous situations and manage changing priorities;
    • work successfully within a matrix organization.
  • Proven ability to perform effectively under pressure and manage stress in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong capability to balance and prioritize competing demands.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Significant experience leading the successful execution of increasingly complex commercial credit transactions across diverse industries and/or international markets.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for customer engagements.
  • Collaborative team player with a strong willingness to support and assist peers.
  • Fully bilingual, with professional proficiency in both English and French.

What will make you stand out:

  • International and/or commercial banking experience.
  • Experience in Business Development is an asset
  • MBA, CFA or CPA designation.
  • Working knowledge of insurance underwriting principles and practices.
  • Advanced Excel skills. Coding skills is an asset.
