Job Description:
CHARACTERISTIC JOB DUTIES:
The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic, or typical of the job class:
- Operate the industrial dishwasher
- Wash glassware and other implements by hand when necessary
- Put all dishes, equipment, and implements back to the appropriate location upon cleaning
- Empty and clean all trash and compost receptacles
- Clean dish storage areas
- Follow sanitation policies at all times
- Provide assistance to prep cook and other kitchen staff as needed, especially during peak times
- Perform opening, closing and side work
- Clean up spills or broken glassware immediately
- Report any sanitation or janitorial issues to appropriate to supervisor
- May be called upon to carry out deep cleaning projects such as cleaning ovens, walk in coolers and freezers.
- Records dishwasher maintenance, temperature logs and cleaning schedules as required
- Assists in preparing meals, including dietary meals, as directed by the Cook or FSM
- Follows work practices to ensure the efficient delivery of food services as required
- Cleans the kitchen and kitchen equipment
- Keeps simple records and completes incident reports as necessary
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Assist with receiving and storage of supplies using FIFO method
- Participate in daily stand up meetings
NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all of the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.
MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL ATTAINED:
The successful job applicant will have completed High School
NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.
SPECIAL LICENSES, DIPLOMAS, CERTIFICATIONS OR REQUIREMENTS:
The successful applicant will hold/have:
- Food Safe Level 1
- WHIMIS
- Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
MINIMUM PRIOR RELATED EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES
The incumbent must have the following experience before hire:
- Up to three months of prior related experience, including (up to three months of) institutional kitchen experience or equivalent.
- Ability to follow instructions and help with various tasks, as needed
- Time management skills
- Attention to detail and sanitation rules
- Demonstrated ability to work in a positive manner and communicate effectively
- Food Safe Level 1
- WHIMIS
PHYSICAL EFFORT/DEXTERITY REQUIRED:
- The performance of the job requires a frequent amount of standing, manipulating foods and moderate amounts of lifting, cutting, chopping, carrying supplies and walking.
- The incumbent is required to lift more than 20 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a kitchen in a ministry unit/social services facility. The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:
- Hot/steamy environment
- Noisy
- Crowded in some cases
- Pressures of timeline
EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS:
The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to:
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Moving objects
- Sharp objects
- Electrical hazards
- Injury from lifting
- Falling on wet/slippery floors
- Burns, cuts and going into freezers
- Other potentially dangerous situations
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:
The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):
- Universal Precautions
- Use of rubber mats
- Use gloves provided
- Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment when necessary
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $25.07 to $25.07 with a maximum of $25.07.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
