About The Role

The Lead Data Engineer at McKesson is a senior individual contributor within our Decision Intelligence organization. This role is pivotal in designing, delivering, and operationalizing scalable data engineering and analytics solutions that support the PSaS Business Unit. As a technical leader and player coach, the Lead Data Engineer combines deep hands-on engineering expertise with solution leadership, mentorship, and cross-functional influence. This position involves leading end-to-end technical delivery of complex data initiatives, collaborating with various stakeholders, and ensuring the development of reliable, high-performance data pipelines. The role also emphasizes driving automation, establishing best practices, and enabling advanced analytics and machine learning use cases to support business growth and innovation.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have recognized expertise in data engineering and analytics within large enterprise environments. A minimum of 10+ years of relevant experience, with a degree or equivalent qualification, is typically required. Proven ability to independently lead complex technical initiatives with minimal oversight is essential. Candidates should possess a deep understanding of data architecture, ETL/ELT patterns, and large-scale data processing. Strong stakeholder communication and collaboration skills are necessary to effectively translate analytical requirements into scalable solutions. Experience influencing technical direction and mentoring other engineers without formal management responsibilities is highly valued.

Responsibilities

Lead end-to-end technical delivery for complex data engineering initiatives or domains, ensuring solutions are scalable, reliable, and aligned with enterprise standards. Serve as a senior technical point of contact for data engineering within cross-functional squads, providing guidance and expertise. Design and build scalable, reliable batch and real-time data pipelines across internal and external systems, leveraging modern tools and platforms. Lead solution design and influence architectural decisions in collaboration with Data Architects and enterprise teams to ensure consistency and best practices. Define, implement, and uphold engineering standards, patterns, and best practices aligned with McKesson’s data strategy. Mentor and guide data engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and technical coaching to foster a high-performing team. Ensure the quality, reliability, performance, and long-term maintainability of data products and pipelines. Partner with Product Managers, Data Scientists, Analysts, and business stakeholders to translate analytical requirements into scalable data solutions. Drive a focus on automation and reusability across data engineering solutions to improve efficiency and reduce technical debt. Oversee testing strategies, production readiness, observability, and operational stability of data pipelines to ensure seamless deployment and operation. Proactively identify and address technical debt, leading remediation efforts to maintain system health. Enable advanced analytics and machine learning use cases through optimized data models and pipelines, supporting data-driven decision-making. Communicate technical designs, tradeoffs, risks, and outcomes clearly to stakeholders at all levels.
