Job Summary

The Senior Director of Internal Audit supports the Chief Internal Auditor in implementing a risk-based approach designed to assist management in the attainment of their objectives. The Senior Director of Internal Audit (SDIA) is second in charge and assumes responsibility for the department in the absence of the Chief Internal Auditor (CIA).

The work involves execution of a comprehensive internal audit program, including strategic, THQ process, ministry unit assurance, and IT audit projects. The SDIA will provide staff with ongoing training, coaching, and supervision to the internal audit department; identifying and implementing process improvement strategies; and supporting the organization’s mission and vision through identification, assessment and reporting of risks.

Key Accountabilities

  • Collaborates with the CIA to develop and execute a risk-based audit plan for The Salvation Army, focusing on key operational and financial controls.
  • Ensures audits comply with IIA Standards, including review of working papers and audit scopes, and participates in internal quality assurance reviews.
  • Tracks management action plans and escalates overdue items; ensures timely resolution of audit findings.
  • Keeps audit team informed of changes in audit standards, laws, and guidelines relevant to internal auditing.
  • Assists in managing and updating both general and IT-specific audit plans, ensuring adequate resources and expertise.
  • Identifies high-risk areas within the organization to inform audit priorities and planning decisions.
  • Manages and coaches audit staff, overseeing their work and supporting professional development through training and feedback.
  • Collaborates on staff training plans covering IIA Standards, internal controls, audit tools, Salvation Army financial systems, and audit methodologies.
  • Serves as lead on high-level, complex audits, responsible for planning, execution, reporting, and supervising the audit team.
  • Supports the CIA in Audit Committee presentations, participates in professional development, and may travel extensively for audit engagements.

Education and Experience Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field experience, plus a CPA or equivalent.
  • IT audit certification or willingness to obtain certification, e.g., CISA.
  • An audit designation such as CIA, CFE, or MBA is desirable.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a senior level internal audit role.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of auditing and risk management practices, procedures, and principles, sufficient to interpret and analyze complex concepts and apply these in innovative ways. Skills and knowledge should include an extensive understanding of financial, operational, and compliance risk, IIA standards and not-for-profit accounting rules.
  • Thorough understanding and familiarity with the COSO internal control framework, and familiarity with the COSO enterprise risk management framework, and the COSO fraud risk management framework.
  • Based on the IIA’s competency framework: Expert level in at least 17 of the 23 categories in the professionalism, performance, environment, and leadership and communication knowledge areas.
  • Maintains high motivation and confidence while managing multiple deadlines and tasks efficiently.
  • Develops innovative solutions to complex challenges.
  • Builds strong relationships across all levels, including with external auditors, and leads projects effectively.
  • Strong written, verbal, and listening skills combined with solid project management expertise.
  • Handles highly confidential matters with the utmost integrity, discretion, and professionalism

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $135,102.26 to $168,877.83 with a maximum of $202,653.39.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
