About the role

Primoris Canada is an infrastructure contractor serving major firms in the oil, gas, power, petrochemical, and heavy oil industries. Our services include tailings and hydro-transport pipeline construction and maintenance, storage tank construction and maintenance, industrial facilities multi-discipline construction and maintenance, piping fabrication, and pipeline integrity services.

Position Summary

The Project Accountant is responsible for the complete financial administration and oversight of complex oil and gas construction projects. This role ensures the accuracy and integrity of all project-related financial information, focusing on job cost accounting, client invoicing, subcontractor financial management, and reporting on the overall financial performance of the project.

Key Responsibilities

Project Setup & Budget Integrity

  • Collaborate with the estimating department to transition the project estimate into a detailed control budget.
  • Establish and maintain the project’s cost code structure to ensure accurate cost allocation and tracking.

Project Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Assist the project team in completing detailed cost reports, including budgets, incurred costs, Estimate to Complete (ETC), and Estimate at Completion (EAC).
  • Perform regular variance analysis by reconciling actual costs against the project budget and forecast.
  • Prepare project accruals and ensure the timely and accurate preparation of all client invoicing.
  • Process and verify submitted journal entries and cost reclassifications with required documentation.
  • Generate and distribute various internal and external project cost reports for project management and clients.

Subcontractor & Vendor Financial Management

  • Track the financial impact of the change management process, ensuring all change orders are properly documented, costed, and logged.
  • Review project requisitions to verify cost coding, descriptions, estimated costs, and back-up documentation.
  • Liaise directly with Accounts Receivable/Payable, Subcontract, and Procurement teams.
  • Review subcontractor daily tickets and LEMs, verifying costs and client approvals to facilitate payment.
  • Compile and maintain logs of subcontractor and vendor cost data.

Project Close-Out

  • Lead the financial close-out activities for the project.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and vendors to ensure all final invoices are received, reconciled, and processed.
  • Develop and issue final project financial reports and documentation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field is preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in a project controls or project accounting role within the engineering and construction services industry.
  • A professional accounting designation (or progress towards one) would be considered a strong asset.

Skills & Competencies

  • Accounting & Financial Acumen: Advanced knowledge of project controls and accounting principles. Strong technical and analytical skills are essential.
  • Software Proficiency: Proficiency in the use of MS Office products is required. Experience with an ERP system is highly desirable.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to advise and interact effectively with all levels of management.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations with limited standardization.
  • Time Management: Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
