About the role
Position Summary
The Associate Director of Care (ADOC) supports the Director of Care in providing leadership, coordination, and oversight of nursing and personal care services within the long-term care home. Working collaboratively with the Director of Care, the ADOC assists in ensuring compliance with the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) standards, and organizational policies and procedures.
The ADOC contributes to the delivery of safe, high-quality, and person-centered care, supports staff development, and promotes a culture of excellence, compliance, and continuous improvement. The ADOC assumes delegated responsibilities of the Director of Care in their absence.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Management
- Support the Director of Care in providing leadership to the nursing team, including Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), and Personal Support Workers (PSWs).
- Assist with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing and personal care services to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements and best practices.
- Participate as a member of the leadership team in operational planning, quality initiatives, and decision-making processes.
- Support ongoing compliance with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC), Public Health, and other regulatory bodies.
Resident Care & Safety
- Support a resident-centered approach to care that addresses residents’ physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and review of individualized care plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
- Monitor resident care indicators such as falls, responsive behaviours, skin integrity, infection prevention and control, and medication safety, and report trends to the Director of Care.
- Assist in responding to resident and family concerns, ensuring timely communication and follow-up.
Human Resources & Team Development
- Support recruitment, onboarding, training, mentoring, and performance evaluation of nursing and PSW staff.
- Promote a positive, respectful, and collaborative work environment that supports staff engagement and retention.
- Assist with staff scheduling to meet resident needs and ministry staffing requirements.
- Support the Director of Care in addressing performance issues in accordance with organizational policies and collective agreements (where applicable).
Regulatory Compliance & Reporting
- Assist the Director of Care in ensuring compliance with the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, and all relevant Ontario regulations and standards.
- Participate in inspections, audits, and accreditation processes as required.
- Support the collection, monitoring, and reporting of clinical indicators and quality improvement data.
- Assist in maintaining accurate and complete documentation related to resident care and staffing.
Quality Improvement & Risk Management
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives focused on resident safety and care outcomes.
- Assist with the investigation, documentation, and follow-up of incidents, complaints, and critical events.
- Support the implementation of evidence-based practices and updated standards of care.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to identify opportunities for system and process improvements.
Qualifications
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) required.
- Minimum 2–3 years of clinical leadership or supervisory experience in a long-term care or healthcare environment.
- Working knowledge of the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, and applicable Ontario regulations and standards.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to resident-centered care and quality improvement.
- Experience with staffing, scheduling, and quality initiatives considered an asset.
