Department/Unit/Program Description

The Operating Room performs elective and emergency surgery on an outpatient and inpatient basis. The multidisciplinary team of surgeons, anesthetists, nurses and support staff work together to ensure a positive experience for the patient.

Position Summary

The Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) is an advanced practice Registered Nurse that provides excellence in Peri-operative nursing care through expert clinical practice, consultation, teamwork, education and leadership. Through specialized RNFA education and training, the RNFA has developed specific technical skills which enable them to assist surgeons with specific intraoperative procedures. The RNFA works collaboratively with other nursing staff, and may also provide nursing care during all phases of the patients’ journey. In all phases of patient care, the RNFA works interdependently with nursing staff in the respective departments, as well as the rest of the care team to create optimal results and an excellent experience for the patient.

The Operating Room is currently seeking a Permanent Part Time Registered Nurse First Assist to join their healthcare team.

Essential Qualifications

Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in Good Standing Operating Room Certificate from an accredited educational facility Certificate in Peri-Operative Nursing (Canada) Minimum 5 years of clinical experience as a peri-operative nurse Graduate of a recognized RNFA program Current BCLS certification, on hire Knowledge of ORNAC and IPAC Standards Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills with patients, families and other healthcare professionals Commitment to continuous professional development and continuing education Self-directed and able to work with minimal supervision Computer knowledge and skills Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing work environment Ability to function as a team member Ability to respond to urgent/emergent situations Must be able to fulfill physical requirements of the job, as per the current Physical Demands Analysis

Preferred Qualifications

B.Sc.N. Master/Degree in a related field

Hours of Work

Must be available to work a variety of eight (8) hour shifts Monday to Sunday, days, evenings, nights, weekends, including statutory holidays and on-call. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the ONA Collective Agreement.
