Position Summary... Senior Counsel supports the legal and compliance requirements of the business by providing expert labour and employment legal advice, managing complex matters, and developing best practices within the Legal team. This role may also involve leading cross-functional initiatives and educating internal stakeholders on legal matters.
What You'll Do...
- Senior Counsel creates and builds labour and employment capabilities within the Legal team for this area of legal expertise, ensuring significant cross-functional impact. This role involves setting and achieving clear objectives and key results (OKRs) for the legal domain, while staying current with legislative, legal, and regulatory changes. Regular updates, summaries, and analyses of these changes are provided to key stakeholders
- The position may involve planning, developing, and delivering internal education to the Legal team and broader business on specialized legal areas. This includes developing a comprehensive knowledge bank of training materials and related documentation. Senior Counsel builds best-in-class processes and templates to mitigate risk, reduce costs, and improve efficiency. Responsibilities may include assigning tasks within the cross-functional team and providing regular performance feedback.
- Senior Counsel manages complex legal matters, negotiates and drafts intricate legal agreements, and provides ongoing legal advice to business units. The role also involves representing the company in legal proceedings before civil courts, administrative tribunals, or other regulatory bodies as required. Additionally, the position supports cross-functional initiatives through the provision of legal and business advice, effectively managing external counsel when engaged.
- Educating and training business units on legal and compliance requirements is a key responsibility, often conducted in partnership with business stakeholders and compliance teams. Senior Counsel identifies and implements efficient ways of working both within and outside the legal department, ensuring alignment on overall legal strategies and approaches.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of labour and employment law experience at a leading law firm and/or in-house legal department dealing with a variety of labour & employment matters, including human rights matters.
- Excellent drafting and negotiation skills, as well as the ability to prioritize competing demands.
- Strong business acumen and interpersonal skills
Licensing & Other Qualifications
- LL.B/J.D. and member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
