The Role

Training & Engagement:

  • Participate in pre-season orientation and training of waste handling procedures and post-show pick.
  • Attend scheduled meetings with the Operations Manager to review event staffing, logistics, and waste flow plans.
  • Follow established venue waste handling procedures and diversion goals as set by the National Sustainability Manager.
  • Support pre-season setup of sorting areas and front-of-house waste stations in accordance with existing venue layouts.
  • Assist with preparing sorting equipment, signage, and supplies prior to the start of the season.
  • Provide event-day directions to sorting personnel based on established procedures.
  • Communicate operational updates and immediate needs directly to the Operations Manager.
  • Assist Experience Manager with sustainability communication for engagement assets where possible.
  • Perform additional operational tasks as assigned by the Operations Manager or National Sustainability Manager.

Resource Recovery & Material Circularity Operations:

  • Supervise the event-day sorting during events.
  • Oversee the hands-on sorting of recycling, compost, landfill, and reusable materials following established procedures.
  • Regularly participate in sorting activities to demonstrate proper procedures and assist sorting team.
  • Provide real-time oversight of waste flow from front-of-house collection points to designated sorting areas.
  • Assist food and beverage departments with clear instruction on waste disposal to maximize diversion from concession stands and kitchens.
  • Monitor contamination at sorting stations and provide corrective directions to staff in the moment.
  • Assist Operations Manager with tour greening initiatives and Zero Waste tours.
  • Maintain organization, cleanliness, and safety of sorting areas throughout load-in, showtime, and load-out.
  • Identify operational challenges during events and escalate them to the Operations Manager for direction.
  • Ensure all diversion activities are executed in accordance with venue policies and the national diversion goals as set by the National Sustainability Manager.

Reporting and Data Collection:

  • Track and report diversion metrics for RBC Amphitheatre, using pre-defined templates and reporting tools.
  • Collect accurate weights of compost before sending offsite.
  • Maintain operational documentation such as event-day notes and photos of sorting setups for internal use and to compare against hauler data and invoices when needed.
  • Compile end-of-event and end-of-season summaries for the Operations Manager, to reflect venue performance.
  • Follow reporting procedures as established by the National Sustainability Manager, ensuring alignment with national reporting requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education related to sustainability.
  • At least 1 year in a leadership position in one of the following: operations/event coordination, guest services and communications, event, or campus sustainability/zero waste events.
  • Creative thinker and problem solver.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Acute sense of judgment, tact, and diplomacy.
  • A strong sense of teamwork and ability to execute programs.
  • Time management and the ability to excel in an unstructured environment.
  • Passion for driving environmental impact through both hands-on and administrative work.

Job Posting Compensation Range/Rate: $23 per hour

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

On-site work requires about 90% of the time spent walking, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying 50+ lbs. Must be comfortable working outdoors in all conditions as well as in an environment where alcohol is sold with various levels of noise.
