Engineer in Training (EIT) positions involve work that falls within the infrastructure spectrum of planning, capital construction, and maintenance primarily in the areas of Light Rail Transit (LRT) Signals. The EIT will have an opportunity to develop the 22 engineering competencies, as per the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
Reporting to the Leader - Signal Systems, you will assist the LRT Signals Engineering team with the design, modifications and for the maintenance and operations of the LRT Signal System. Primary duties include:
- Assist with the development of concepts, plans, and designs for Signal System modifications.
- Organize and maintain LRT Signals drawings and documentation.
- Provide assistance in ongoing LRT Signals projects and contracts.
- Provide Signals support to other LRT projects (such as Track and Way Rehabilitation, and Extension projects).
- Assist Signals team in design and construction activities of signals, upgrades, and repairs.
- Carry out root cause failure analysis.
- Prepare technical documents and assist with conducting crossing inspections.
- Develop signals bypasses and test plans to assist with closure weekend activities.
- Coordinate with Drafting department for the development of LRT Signal Drawings as required.
- Collaborate with Signals team for developing Key Performance Indicator (KPI) reports.
Qualifications
- A degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering and registration as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) by the first day of work.
- Those hired prior to graduation from an undergraduate Engineering degree in Civil, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering must be registered as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) no later than three months from their start date.
- Preference will be given to applicants with up to 1 year of engineering experience.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or a provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
- An intermediate proficiency with Microsoft office (Word, Excel and Outlook).
- Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, great organizational skills and problem solving skills are required for success in this position.
- A demonstrated ability to interpret and understand technical information, as well as the ability to follow directions, and strong business skills are required to excel in this role.
Pre-employment Requirements
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
Workstyle
- This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

- Compensation: Pay Grade 10 $44.01 - 58.82 per hour
- Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.
- Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week with 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
