Responsibilities JOB PURPOSE The Senior Director of Permitting and Policy serves as a senior leader responsible for guiding Pattern Energy’s environmental, permitting, conservation, and energy policy strategy across a portfolio of renewable energy and transmission projects. This role leads high-impact interventions on complex and high-risk wind, solar, storage, and transmission projects, helping resolve development challenges and advance strategic environmental, stakeholder, regulatory, and financing outcomes. The position works at the intersection of development, environmental strategy, external affairs, legal, and finance to support successful project execution in challenging regulatory, political, and environmental contexts. The role also supports company-wide environmental strategy across development, construction, and operations, including strategic regulatory guidance on environmental matters. DUTIES AND KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Lead resolution of high-risk, controversial, or strategically critical projects by developing creative permitting, mitigation, conservation, and stakeholder strategies. Provide senior-level leadership for environmental permitting and regulatory strategy for Pattern development projects, including projects in the United States and Canada. Represent Pattern in key industry groups, policy forums, agency discussions, and stakeholder engagements to help shape regulatory frameworks and conservation approaches. Translate policy, legislative, and regulatory developments into actionable company strategy for development, construction, operations, and leadership teams. Provide strategic support across development, construction, and operations on environmental permitting, compliance, regulatory interpretation, and environmental risk management. Mentor and provide strategic direction to environmental staff across development, construction, and operations, supporting prioritization, knowledge-sharing, and consistent best practices. Support engagement with Tribal Nations, First Nations, local communities, agencies, NGOs, and other sensitive stakeholder groups, integrating cultural, legal, and regulatory considerations into project strategies. Develop and recommend defensible strategies for complex permitting pathways, mitigation approaches, compliance issues, and project advancement decisions. Select, direct, and manage external consultants, specialized advisors, and industry resources supporting environmental, permitting, policy, and stakeholder initiatives. Support sustainable finance and ESG-related strategies by aligning environmental and permitting approaches with financing partner expectations and project capital market considerations. Qualifications EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION REQUIRED Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree such as J.D., M.S., M.P.P., or similar strongly preferred. A minimum of 10 years of experience in renewable energy, infrastructure development, environmental permitting, environmental regulatory policy, or a related field is required. The successful candidate must have deep experience with federal, state/provincial, and local environmental regulatory frameworks, including NEPA, ESA, MBTA, CWA, and Canadian equivalents. Additional Requirements Demonstrated experience engaging in policy development, legislative or regulatory processes, industry working groups, and agency consultations. Experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects with significant environmental, political, commercial, community, or regulatory sensitivity. Management experience leading small to mid-size development, permitting, environmental, or cross-functional project teams. Strong analytical, negotiation, communication, judgment, and strategic problem-solving skills. Ability to balance environmental, permitting, regulatory, stakeholder, and commercial considerations under uncertainty and time constraints. Experience engaging with Tribal Nations, First Nations, or similarly sensitive stakeholder environments preferred. Familiarity with sustainable finance, ESG frameworks, Equator Principles, International Finance Corporation Performance Standards, or project financing considerations preferred. Thorough understanding of the renewable energy industry, emerging markets, and environmental/permitting considerations for wind, solar, storage, transmission, or related infrastructure projects. Must be willing and able to travel as required to support project, stakeholder, agency, industry, and internal business needs. Technical Skills and Knowledge Deep knowledge of environmental permitting, conservation strategy, regulatory compliance, and environmental risk management for renewable energy and transmission projects. Strong understanding of federal environmental laws and regulatory processes, including NEPA, ESA, MBTA, CWA, and related state/provincial and local frameworks. Working knowledge of Canadian environmental permitting and regulatory requirements preferred. Ability to interpret complex legal, regulatory, environmental, and policy issues and translate them into practical project execution guidance. Strong capability to develop mitigation strategies, stakeholder engagement plans, and defensible approaches for projects with novel or high-risk permitting and compliance challenges. The expected starting pay range for this role is $174,000 - $216,000 USD. This range is an estimate and base pay may be above or below the ranges based on several factors including but not limited to location, work experience, certifications, and education. In addition to base pay, Pattern’s compensation program includes a bonus structure for full-time employees of all levels.
